Bog Horror

Biology

Clicking sounds fill the air, followed by a piercing scream as another falls victim to the Bog Horrors. These multi-legged creatures are the product of failed experiments or necromantic energies having gone out of control. They combine animal body parts with pieces of fungus and decaying wood. Their bodies are enhanced by the necromantic energies and make them significantly more powerful than normal animals, able to leap great distances. They utilize echolocation to find their prey, which makes notable clicking noises.

Mobile Ambushers

Bog Horrors are less intelligent than most humanoids, but they are still quite capable of working together and utilizing tactics to ambush their prey. They are adept climbers and capable of leaping great distances, which they use to great effect to approach enemies from unusual angles. They then drag their prey to themselves using their long tongue-like appendages before biting down and holding them in place. While they are latched onto their prey, they drain them of their life essence until they are nothing but empty husks.

Intelligence and Social Behavior

As mentioned they are not entirely without thought, but Bog Horrors are far from an intelligent or social species. They rely on their warped instincts and will viciously attack nearly all living creatures, although they will avoid anything that looks too tough for them to handle. Occasionally, it has been shown that a necromancer could control one or a few of these creatures to some extent, but rarely for long and most that tried ended up being devoured by their creations.   They are not technically living in the usual sense, and they require no sleep or sustenance. As such, they are very patient hunters, capable of and willing to stalk their prey for extended periods of time until and opening presents itself. While they are still susceptible to conventional injuries, they show no signs of being able to feel pain and they will often fight until the bitter end.

Crafting Materials

The flesh and other material that make up the Bog Horror's body have taken up excessive amounts of necrotic energy. This is part of what makes them so dangerous, but it also means that parts of them can be harvested and enchanted to become useful items.   Armor incorporating the flesh, bone and wood of a Bog Horror can grant resistance to necrotic energies, while a cloak interwoven with it might allow one to climb like they do. Their skin can also be used as a minor component in goggles of night, while the bone spikes can be fashioned into weapons of wounding in large enough quantities.
