Battle of the Golden Fields

The final battle that marked the defeat of the Shinotayaku Empire in the first great war. The imperials were commanded by the Imperial Field Marshal Ḱyoto and the Heartlanders were commanded by the hand of the king Arthur Ilvenar. After the battle Arthur Ilvenar had builders erect a great monument to honor the brave men from both sides who fought and died in the battle.

The Conflict

Prelude

In the first great war the Shinotayaku were invading the west and the imperial field marshal Ḱyoto was tasked with attacking the Heartlands from the south. While he took the city of Isteral an army comprised of united forces of the west under the command of the hand of the king Arthur Ilvenar arrived to defend Lania.

Battlefield

The two cities of Lania and Isteral are separated by a river with a large white bridge allowing access between the two cities. Between Lania and the bridge there is golden farmlands were the later stages of the battle would take place. Arthur Ilvenar deployed his spearmen on the bridge with reserves near Lania's walls. Archers and cavalry were positioned on the banks of the river to beat back any enemies that tried to cross it.

The Engagement

Arthur Ilvenar thought that the bridge and the lake would be the best place to fight because the lake was hard to cross and the bridge was a valuable chokepoint. If the banks were not protected the imperials could surround the city and wait out the siege. This would not do and so Arthur prepared his men to do battle outside the city walls.

Day One

The imperials charged across the bridge only to be met by hundreds of spears. Ḱyoto ordered the rest of his infantry to charge across the river but they were constantly harrased by archers while trying to cross the river. As soon as they had gained a foothold they were pushed back again into the river by Heartlander lancers.

Day Two

The battle continued as before but this time Ḱyoto ordered his men to charge across the river without any coordination. Or at least that was how it looked. Suddenly men took up hidden spears from under the high waters and repelled the charging lancers. Hundreds fell and the rest were forced to retreat. Arthur was forced to send in his reserves to keep the imperials at bay but then the spearmen on the bridge routed. Imperials poured over the bridge but Arthur ordered his magicians to destroy the bridge and hundreds of imperials fell to their deaths. With this Arthur rallied his cavalry and charged the imperials again and again until the were forced to retreat over the river again, harrased by archers all the way over the river.

Day three

Morale was low and Arthur had lost many men, eventually when the imperials charged over the lake the Heartlanders were forced back into Lania and the cavalry fled out into the plains. Now there was nothing left to do, the imperial field marshal sieged the city and Arthur and his forces could do nothing but wait. Under the cover of night an imperial agent got past the defences and burned the food stores, before the agent could open the gates he was killed but the damage was done. No food was left and Arthur and his men decided that the last thing to do was to charge out and die in a blaze of fire and glory instead of starving to death. In the night they charged out to fight one last time and suprised the imperials, the westerners smashed the oposition and cavalry that had fled before returned to the fight and flanked the imperials. Many imperials tried to flee over the river but died trying to get there while the imperial infantry was surrounded. When it was clear that the imperials had lost the imperial field marshal ordered his men to fight to the last man and they did. The battle would be known as the closest Arthur Ilvenar ever came to defeat.
