King Urien of Gorre

King of Gorre, Sovereign of Strathclyde and Cambernet, Lord of the Solway Firth

King Urien ap Cynfarch

Son of the uniting king, Urien became a man in the years following the great Votadini migration. His father was the king of the Southern Uplands, his mother, a daughter of Cunneda, and it was never his intentions to follow his father to the throne of Gorre . However, with increasing raids from the Scots, a growing Saxon force and the Picts threat in the north. He was born a few years after his father became the first king of Gorre. Cynfarch was a ill host and a ruthless king, one who even resisted the will of the distant High King Pendragon, and the people rejocied when he died, but young Urien had his work cut out for him as a tribal king.   Only after the Battle of Eburacum, where Urien gathered men to ride south did people begin to see the warrior king that he was. After a long war, he brought the remaining tribes to heel, and began adopting the ideas of the south. In the later part of the 480'ies, Gorre saw the first castles being built along the coast of Galloway, and Urien even managed to make King Brangore of Strathclyde a vassal of his, as was the Duke of Cambernet, cementing Gorre's rule of the Solway Firth and also securing his voice on the Supreme Collegium as he became the Adwower of the Abbot-Bishop of Lugh's Wall.   He is twice a widower, his sons are strong warriors themselves, but when Uther offered up the youngest daughter of Gorlois as a bride, he did not hesitate. She was young, but sure to give him even more respect among his peers. After all, Lot and Nentres, the cousin-kings of Garloth and Goroddin seemed to have made a good match, and who knew if a son born from that girl's belly could bring more pride and strength to his land!
