Kuni Family

The Kuni family is one of the most enigmatic and formidable families within the Crab Clan , known for their relentless battle against the Shadowlands and their mastery of the dark and dangerous arts necessary to combat its taint. They are the guardians of the Crab Clan’s knowledge of the Shadowlands and the protectors of Rokugan from its horrors, often working in the shadows and dealing with forces that would terrify even the bravest samurai.

Origins and History

Founding: The Kuni family was founded by Kuni, a legendary shugenja who recognized the need for specialized knowledge and techniques to combat the Shadowlands’ threats. His descendants have continued his mission with unwavering dedication.

Legacy of Knowledge: Over centuries, the Kuni have amassed a vast repository of knowledge about the Shadowlands, its creatures, and the methods to combat them. This includes forbidden and esoteric magics that other families might consider too dangerous to study.

Philosophy and Values

Pragmatism: The Kuni family values pragmatism above all. They understand that the battle against the Shadowlands requires sacrifices and hard choices, and they are willing to make those choices to protect Rokugan.

Duty and Sacrifice: The Kuni see their role as a sacred duty, one that often requires personal sacrifice. Many Kuni shugenja bear the physical and spiritual scars of their encounters with the Shadowlands, yet they continue their work undeterred.

Secrecy and Vigilance: Given the dangerous nature of their work, the Kuni operate with a high level of secrecy. They are constantly vigilant, always watching for signs of Shadowlands corruption both outside and within Rokugan.

Notable Traditions and Practices

Kuni Witch Hunters: Among the most feared members of the Kuni family are the Kuni Witch Hunters. These specialized warriors and shugenja hunt down and eliminate Shadowlands threats, as well as any tainted individuals within Rokugan. Their methods are harsh but effective.  To protect themselves from evil spirits, witchhunters paint their faces with white and red make-up.  The designs are ritual, based on their teachers and family, and they always want the face paint on when facing the Tainted.

Purification Rites: The Kuni have developed numerous purification rites and spells to cleanse taint and protect against corruption. These rituals are essential for any Crab Clan warriors returning from the Shadowlands.

Forbidden Knowledge: The Kuni possess tomes and scrolls of forbidden knowledge that detail the nature of the Shadowlands, its creatures, and the dark magics that can be used against them. This knowledge is closely guarded and shared only with those deemed trustworthy and capable.

Roles and Responsibilities

Defenders Against the Taint: The primary role of the Kuni is to defend Rokugan from the Shadowlands’ taint. This involves both offensive actions against the Shadowlands and defensive measures to protect Crab Clan territory and beyond.

Advisors and Scholars: The Kuni serve as advisors to Crab Clan leaders, providing crucial knowledge and strategies for dealing with the Shadowlands. They also act as scholars, continually researching and developing new methods to combat corruption.

Interrogators and Investigators: The Kuni are often called upon to investigate cases of taint and corruption within Rokugan. They have the authority to interrogate and, if necessary, execute those found guilty of colluding with the Shadowlands.

Challenges and Conflicts

Isolation: The Kuni’s work often isolates them from other families and clans. Their knowledge and methods can make them seem distant and aloof, and their secrecy can breed mistrust.

Taint and Corruption: The constant exposure to the Shadowlands and its corrupting influence is a significant risk. Many Kuni shugenja and Witch Hunters bear the scars of their encounters, and some tragically fall to the very forces they fight against.

Internal Struggle: The Kuni must constantly guard against the temptation to use the dark powers they study. The line between using forbidden knowledge for good and falling into corruption is perilously thin
