Jared Maximus

Baron Maximus Marshall Jared Maximus (a.k.a. Marshal Jared)

The Red Marshal's rugged and serious gaze appears to be evaluating everyone in his vicinity. His recent experiences in adventure have returned him to a state of readiness for combat.   Observant individuals might notice a hint of red in the marshal's pupils—an aftereffect of his encounter with the Miasma.   As a newly appointed Baron, he finds the accompanying responsibilities somewhat uneasy for the time being.

Now in the twilight of his years, Maximus stands as a sentinel of the old ways and a guardian of valor and duty. His presence commands respect, his voice carries the weight of authority.

Into the Woods

We successfully dodged a crisis this time! Martha the secret spot deep in the woods is such a magical place that deserves to stay under wraps. With a little bit of luck and our ongoing watchfulness, the Dales can remain peaceful and free of any bandit trouble.   But enough unpleasantries.   I am truly excited about our upcoming festival! With your wonderful guidance, I have no doubt it will be a great success!   Thank you, my love, for all you do.   It is good to know the homestead is in good hands.     Forever yours,   Jared

A hunch pays off!

I knew my instincts were right, Martha. We returned to Corbin's room, sticking to our usual routine, and uncovered a fragment of an ancient monolithic statue. While its exact age is hard to pinpoint, its significant wear and tear clearly indicate it's very old. This statue absolutely does not belong to Corbin. If my suspicions hold true, it most likely came from the forest. Restoring it is crucial; it might just be the key to putting the Oath Keeper back to sleep. It has already claimed one life, and I refuse to let it take any more. I am determined to prevent further tragedies, even if it costs me my own life—though I don’t intend to let it threaten my companions. We’re heading out this morning, and a reckoning is coming.   Remember you are the Lady of the household; in my absence, you must lead.   I have faith that you will bring honor to the family name.   Love you, Jared

A visit to the Viscount

The meeting with the Viscount was both unique and engaging. We had a productive exchange of information, and I must commend my colleagues for their professionalism. It appears that knowledge about the Oath Keeper and similar entities is quite limited, which suggests that these concepts are quite ancient. I am hopeful that as we explore this topic further, we will uncover more insights, even though the path ahead seems challenging. Navigating this journey is complex and intriguing.

The waif

I understand that you weren’t expecting me to bring home the waif today. I’ve heard whispers around town about plans to sacrifice the boy, and it weighs heavily on my heart. Ever since I took on this Lordship role, I’ve been so consumed with responsibilities that I haven't had the chance to connect with the lives of our townspeople on a personal level. Timothy, Timmy, has been living on the fringes of our community for quite some time now. From what I’ve gathered, his tragic history is marked by the loss of his parents—his mother passed away during childbirth while his father succumbed to illness. I feel a strong sense of duty to care for those under my protection. When I learned that Timmy was to be sacrificed, something deep within me stirred; I knew I had to ensure his safety.I want to reassure you that, although we haven't spoken much about the grief of losing our own child—who left us far too soon—Timmy is not meant to be a replacement. The sorrow lingers, and when I look at Timmy, I can see fragments of what we once cherished. I truly hope you can find it in your heart to offer him the kindness and warmth that I know you possess. Show him that goodness still exists in this world, even when times feel bleak.

A DEADLY FOREST

I am concerned about what killed Corbin. I know Osric did the right thing by bringing it to our attention, and I will take action to discover the root of this untimely and unfortunate death. I should also mention that nothing about that death seemed natural; it felt unnatural. I felt bad that we couldn't help him, and even worse when I learned how he died. Yes, there is something evil in that forest. When we entered, it was evident that a demonic force was present—perhaps an ancient entity, even older than the forest itself. It's hard to say for sure. Regardless, it was clear that this entity had an advantage in our encounter, prompting me to consider a tactical withdrawal. I wouldn’t face this post-Keeper creature without some form of advantage, as I fear it could potentially kill the entire party. One misstep with this creature could have devastating consequences. At this point, I will officially proclaim that no one is to enter the forest, and I hope the warning is heeded. Upon further reflection, I will take the team further along the highway and see if we can speak to the local Viscount known for his fascination with the supernatural. Perhaps he could shed some light on this matter. We'll be heading out that morning. Wish us luck.

My New companions

Dearest Martha, I wonder if I made a good decision in bringing those three people on board. Lately, requests have become dangerous, and I fear for their safety. They seem to possess skills that have served them well. The caravan leader would not have recommended them if it weren't true, and I hope my instinct as a warrior will prove correct in my assessment that they will contribute and help us progress toward our desired goals.I know that you worry about me, but you need not. I assure you that I will do my best to return home to you safe and to also bring home those under my charge. For now, rest assured that all is in good hands. With love,   Your Jared

A journey continued...

A Legend of the Mist Tinder Box Journal Entry -   Dearest Martha.   I hope this communication reaches you. If it has, the carrier I encountered on the road and paid to deliver it has honored their word.   Indeed, strange things are afoot. The group encountered an abandoned well a few weeks out on the trip. And within it, a monstrosity.   I may have trained to handle everyday occurrences against living men. Indeed, not that creature that I fought on that farmer's land. And most assuredly not what we found in the well. A serpentine creature, corrupted in its nature, engaged us. Fortunately, the apple picker could account for himself enough to allow me to go down to strike the killing blow. We met a strange person near the well. She may know what is happening, and hopefully, sooner rather than later, she will unburden herself of that knowledge.   Time will tell.   Rest assured, you're always in my thoughts. The locket you gave me with your picture and a piece of hair is always near my heart.   You are in my dreams until we meet again.   Jared.

A Letter to Martha

A Legend of the Mist - Tinderbox Journal Entry   My dearest love,   I hope you can forgive me for not speaking to you in person. I feared that if I came to see you, I wouldn’t be able to leave. I swore to defend the hamlet and its residents when I became a Red Marshall. Please know that I have endeavored to fulfill that oath.   Now, I find myself needing to leave your side once again. You were present at the town meeting, where we barely convinced the elders and townsfolk that this threat is real. My comrades and I have been tasked with rooting out this evil.   I don’t want to go. There is something unnatural at play here. But duty must prevail, mainly to ensure your safety. My companions are an interesting bunch. I expect wise counsel from the experienced members and a touch of daring recklessness from our young apple picker. Hopefully, my influence will lead to favorable outcomes between these two extremes.   I hope to return to your loving arms soon after we deal with this threat.   Pray for us.   Love, Jared
