The Arcane Pillar

9 Flamerule, The Year of Twelve Warnings (1494 DR) Misty Forest, The Sword Coast

Arik Skaylebane and his sixteen-year-old son, Jon, were out hunting at the edge of the Misty Forest when they came upon what they thought was a large dead tree heavily overgrown with vines.
Upon closer inspection, Arik saw that underneath the vines there was stone instead of wood. Pushing the vines aside revealed a 12-foot tall stone pillar with carved writing on all four sides.
When Arik tried to decipher the writing, he triggered an arcane trap that summoned a Hook Horror. It appeared next to Arik.
Both father and son bravely fought and killed the monster. Both were injured during the battle. Jon used his ranger healing-ability to cure his wounds.
With the sun setting, Arik suggested they camp in the area to rest and recover. In the morning, they would both try to determine who or what built the arcane pillar. If need be, they would do what they could to destroy it too.
