Garrick Seaworthy of Saltmarsh Character in Legacy of the Realms | World Anvil

Garrick Seaworthy of Saltmarsh

A member of the sea elf tribe, Meilyr, Garrick "Seaworthy" was born in 1334 DR in the undersea village of Mélamar located some 400 miles west of Tethyr in the Trackless Sea. His life growing up was quite simple. Both of his parents were artisans, known for sculpting coral into beautiful works of art.   One fateful afternoon in 1490 DR, while exploring the depths around his village, Garrick spotted a ship anchored nearby. He also spotted a large group of sahuagins, enemies of his people, leaving the ship heading for his village. He swam back to Mélamar as quickly as he could, but when he arrived it was too late. Many in the village had already been slain, including his family, while some had been captured and were being taken back to the ship he saw earlier.   Garrick hid until it was dark and then quietly made his way to the ship and boarded it. However, he was soon discovered, knocked out, and was taken captive. He awoke sometime later, chained below deck along with several others from his village and many others he later learned were people captured from nearby Tethyr, Amn, Lantan, and Chult. He also soon learned that he and the others were on board the Shackled Destiny, a slaver ship captained by a brutal half-orc named Tagur Bloodaxe who was known for selling slaves throughout the Trackless Sea and Shining Sea. He also discovered that the sahuagins were working with slavers whose ships prowled the coast along both the Trackless Sea and Shining Sea.   For the next several weeks, the Shackled Destiny sailed to various ports selling the unfortunate souls it had captured. The last sea elf from his village had been sold days before Garrick and the remaining few slaves left on board would earn their freedom.   Somewhere off the coast of Amn, the Shackled Destiny encountered the pirate ship, Avernus. The crew of the Avernus was able to defeat Captain Bloodaxe and his crew. The pirates, who valued freedom, freed the slaves and offered to take them to any port city or town they chose to. Garrick, who no longer had any reason to return to his undersea village, chose to remain with the pirates eventually acquiring the skills of a sailor and even adding the surname "Seaworthy" to his first name.   For the next two years, Garrick Seaworthy sailed aboard several pirate ships and merchant's vessels. He honed his skills as an unarmed fighter from traveling monks he met throughout his voyages. While honing his fighting skills, Garrick also acquired a bad habit. Unfortunately, being around pirates and sailors, Garrick had acquired a taste for strong spirits, from Luskan Ale to Zzar, a fortified sherry wine popular in Waterdeep. He often got drunk and got into brawls, almost killing a dwarf sailor once in a drunken rage.   In late 1492, Garrick finished his last voyage aboard the Uncivil Serpent whose new captain, Lekard "Dead-Eye" Cadavrus, had acquired after leading a mutiny against its former captain. Murosko Sessprin. He left as the ship was resupplying in the fishing town of Saltmarsh along the Sea of Swords.   While in Saltmarsh, Garrick met a local human woman named Holly Rist whom he immediately fell in love with. Holly came from a family of well-known lobster catchers. She inherited The Snapping Line, one of the town's popular inns and taverns, from her parents. Garrick, who chose to stay in saltmarsh and give up drinking courted Holly for the next two years. They plan to marry in the spring of 1495.     ***     Garrick Seaworthy lives in the town of Saltmarsh and is currently aiding adventurers who had just explored a nearby house reported to be haunted.
