Batrachiarchy of Verag

The Batrachiarchy of Verag was an independent nation which flourished in what is now the Alderni duchy of Zudemoeras. It was founded in the years following the collapse of the Empire of Kataris, through the unification of several smaller tribes of Bullywugs in the fenlands who had survived several centuries of persecution by the Katari. The tribes are said to have come together under the rulership of the "Mistress of the Fens" - a semi-divine being who, in common with the taboos of the Katari, the Bullywugs would refer to only by her title out of a superstitious dread for the uttering of her name.   The Bullywugs of the Batrachiarchy were also joined by several clans of Goblins - mostly descendents of those enslaved by the Katari, or those who had fled into the swamps to avoid that fate; these goblins were vassals of the Mistress of the Fens, and generally formed an underclass ruled over by the Bullywug warriors.   The Batrachiarchy weathered more than a century of sporadic violence, clashing with the remnants of the Katari Empire and with the Jarls of Balthas for control over the wetlands, but broadly safe from invasion within their swampy home. It was only with the coming of House Erastes, who sought to drain the wetlands for agricultural purposes, that a sustained military effort was made against the Batrachiarchy. The so-called War of the Frog lasted for over 25 years, eventually ending in an Alderni victory at the Battle of the Mitstoen which wiped out the majority of the elite bullywug warriors of the Batrachiarchy. The remaining bullywugs and goblins fled - to Tovenmoor, and further east to Bos Vild.   Little of the cultural history of the Batrachiarchy survives to this day; the bullywug language did not have a written form, and what artefacts they left behind give only passing indications of the structure of their society. The only contemporary accounts of their nation come from Alderni sources - whose depiction of the Batrachiarchy of Verag as brutish and primative savages is most likely of questionable accuracy at best.
