Vulgate

Selon P.A. Karr The Vulgate Version of the Arthurian Romances. Edited from manuscripts in the British Museum by H. Oskar Sommer. Washington: The Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1909-1916. 8 v. (Vol. VIII is an index; vol. VII is a fragmentary romance supplementary to rather than continuing the cycle as presented in the first six volumes.) The text of this is in medieval French, so I do not pretend I combed every page. But Sommer provided what seems to be a pretty complete summary in English glosses on every page of the first six volumes, and even from these the riches of the Vulgate version are obvious. Quotations identified as from the Vulgate are quotations of Sommer's English summary unless otherwise identified or in French. Names drawn from the Vulgate are generally in Sommer's standardizations. The AMS press appears to be making some gesture toward keeping the Vulgate in print at a typically outrageous scholarly price, but I have not yet at the time of revising this handbook been able to obtain the vol umes and have had to depend on the notes made some time ago now, which were done, of necessity, in haste and may not always be perfect ly reliable.
