D a.D. - Grandes manoeuvres
General Summary
King Idres of Cornwall and Praetor Jonathel of Durn-
ovaria (Dorsette) are hiring mercenaries this year as it
appears that war in Dorsette is inevitable.
King Ælle of Sussex and King Æsc of Kent are hiring
mercenaries as well.
War in Caerwent: In mid-spring, a huge fleet of Saxons
appears off Caerwent’s coast. They sail to the Yar River
and sack Yarmouth, Norwich, Buckenham and Thetford.
Caewent then marches against the new invaders, but are
defeated in battle. The leaders of Caerwent are killed,
hundreds flee, but few escape the slave pens. The newcom-
ers and their king, Cwichelm, declare themselves Angles.
King Nanteleod of Escavalon attacks the wild tribesmen
in Cambria, defeats them and adds them to his kingdom.
He then continues on to attack the Irish of Estregales,
defeating their army as well, and accepting the homage
of the King of Estregales.
Praetor Jonathel gathers his people behind the stout walls
of Durnovaria, its storehouses full of carefully stockpiled
supplies. King Idres besieges the city, but is unable to
breach the walls. He orders his army to retreat. Praetor
Jonathel claims a great victory, although all he managed
to do was stop the Cornish army, rather than defeat it.
