CDLXVIII a.D. - Aurélius couronné Haut Roi

General Summary

Vortigern is besieged at Ganarew and dies from a fire within his tower. Aurelius Ambrosius summons the Supreme Collegium who anoints him as High King. He takes the title of Pendragon (“high dragon”, or “head dragon”) derived from his great battle banner. He starts rebuilding the kingdom, but there are still Saxons to take care of. They still occupy Cambria and much of the Southeastern Britain. King Riothamus of Domnonie is made the new King of Cornwall, with the Kingdom of Lyonesse and the Principality of Totnes as his vassals. Prince Idres of Totnes, whose father was the previous King of Cornwall, feels slighted by Aurelius and Riothamus, even though Riothamus marries Idres’ sister and makes Idres his heir.

En Césarée Maxime :

Aurelius Ambrosius and his army pursue Vortigern and besiege him in his new castle on Mount Snowdon. Others call this the Battle of Ganarew. Regardless, a battle ensues, and a priest calls down fire from the heavens. Once the fire takes hold, it continues on blazing until it burns up the tower and Vortigern with it. His army scatters.

Aurelius Ambrosius summons the Supreme Collegium, and they elect him High King. He takes the title of Pendragon (“high dragon” or “head dragon”), derived from his great battle banner. Aurelius introduces a new concept, “vassalage” as his favorites, chief among them Eldol and Gorlois, are given great lands for their loyalty and ability and granted the title of Duke. The Berroc Saxons swear their oaths to High King Aurelius.

Those loyal to Vortigern’s line among the Cymri follow Paschent, Vortigern’s third son, into exile among the continental Saxons. They intermarry with the Saxons and become the Gewisse tribe.
