Brastias

Brastias est un combattant expérimenté, qui possède de petites terres en Roestoc. C'était aussi le maréchal d'Uther. Arthur a voulu réutiliser ses compétences en lui ordonnant de défendre le Nord contre toute intrusion des Pictes. En 513, les défenses de Brastias étaient concentrées sur le Malahaut, et elles avaient été contournées par Lot. Depuis la défaite des Rois Rebelles, les pays de Cambenet et de Nohaut sont tombés, et Brastias a pu s'implanter là-bas, cantonnant ses troupes avancées sur le Mur d'Hadrien. Avec près de 3.000 hommes sous ses ordres, fortifiés dans les anciens ouvrages romains, Brastias est confiant. Il a choisi de placer la moitié de ses troupes en retrait, en Malahaut et sur les cols des Pennines, afin de pouvoir juger de l'importance d'une incursion barbare avant de contre-attaquer. Par la même occasion, les troupes stationnées contribuent à pacifier ces pays peu soumis.

Brastias originally was a knight of Duke Gorloi's. Merlin disguised Sir Ulfius as Sir Brastias on the night Uther begat Arthur. Later, on his accession to the throne, Arthur made Brastias "warden to wait upon the north from Trent forwards, for it was that time the most party the king's enemies." Brastias served Arthur well in the first wave of rebellion. With Ulfius, Brastias traveled across the Channel to summon Kings Ban and Bors to Arthur's aid. On the way, the two of them had to joust down eight of King Claudas' knights who tried to stop them.

Brastias fought in the battle of Bedegraine, but afterward seems to drop out of Malory's account, with no mention that he remained with Arthur long enough to serve at the Round Table. [Malory I, 2, 7, 10-14] Brastias must already have been at least approaching middle age by the time of Arthur's coronation, and he may have retired early into a hermitage. He probably is to be identified with the hermit Brasias of Malory's Book XVIII.
