The Duneswathe, home of the southern humans

This arid zone is south of the Sea of Ales, transitioning into the rolling prairies of Ngahere Koura to the NW and hills of the Free Tribes region to the NE. The ‘dunewalkers’ (southern humans) call themselves the dunjaro and have their own language but long ago adopted the zharrgrund writing system in favor of their historical pictographics. Dunjaro traders, however, are keen to pick up on the tongues of those with whom they interact.

The sandwalkers are semi-nomadic, needing to relocate as oases dry up and others appear. A few major cities dot the desolate desert landscape, and this is where the majority of the urutan (‘beetlefolk’) can be found — those not living in dunjaro settlements are isolationistic. Speaking of which, the aarakocra (‘birdfolk’) almost exclusively live on their own, high among the mountains and mesas across the region. All of these peoples share this difficult landscape and live in relative peace, instead fearing the neighboring rakshasa of the Kingdoms of Deception to the west. In addition, a recent focus of ant folk has appeared in the ENE and the dunjaro name for the area is best translated as the 'Nascent Hive'.

Millennia ago, this region was not as arid as it has become. Long-abandoned ruins such as temples, fortifications and settlements of the dunjaro dot the areas to the east and west.
