dwergachtig -- pious gnomes

Though fewer in number than their zharrgrund (dwarven) compatriots in the Republic of Gloridia, the dwergachtig (“dvair/GACH/tig” — pious gnomes) and their strong sense of community are the soul of the nation. They are generally very level-headed people who take everything seriously, but despite not usually outright saying it, their body language clearly shows when they disapprove (and that includes anyone who doesn’t share they usually strict values). As such, they get along famously with the ezust sarkany (silver dragons) and are easily frustrated at how the karboten (tinker gnomes) always roll their eyes at them. Physically, they’re around 4’ to 4.5’, slightly shorter than a dwarf. They’re also rather hefty — more on the side of rotund, though, rather than sturdy and stout. Despite their physical shortcomings, through hard work a pious gnome is still capable of becoming a great warrior or craftsperson.

Living in proximity to the dwarves this past millennia plus, the dwergachtig have largely become akin to friendly dwarves. Once hung up on the calamity which befell their ancestors (the oedervets or ancient gnomes), the dwergachtig no longer vehemently believe that the use of powerful, god-defying magics was what caused the ancients’ downfall. Today, there are as many dwergachtig wizards as there are practicing priests, but that is not to say that wizards (or sorcerers) don’t believe in the gods — no, the evidence of holy (and unholy) powers on the world are evident to anyone who keeps an open mind. The average pious gnome is observant, quick-witted and strong willed, though not usually as creative as their karboten (tinker gnome) cousins.

Perhaps due to the dwergachtig demeanor, they are more likely to interact directly with the ezust sarkany (silver dragons) who rarely show themselves in public. Luckily, the invariably good-hearted and incorruptible dwergachtig don’t let this influence go to their heads. As such, they are often boosted to positions of power in the Republic of Gloridia. This is sometimes a cause for contention among zharrgrund who still hold to traditions of the power of ones family name.
