Thanyra

Demographics

Mostly human, but given the large amount of trade both from the mountains to the north and the sea-farers, there is a healthy mix of all goodly races, some less-such working in the shadows for the thieve's guild and the pirates.

Government

Corporate oligarchy. Three very wealthy families have control over most of the city's affairs. Two human families, the Althans and the Rielyrs control the trade from the farmlands to the south and west and the sea trade from the Expant Sea, respectively. A third family of halflings, the Leadfoots have a tight grip on the trade with the dwarven clans from the mountains.   These three families determine the vast majority of civil affairs, but also pay for the city's security and infrastructure from their own family coffers, leaving taxes low.

Defences

The city is surrounded on all sides by castellated walls and towers, even the docks could be cut off from the rest of the city should a massive amphibious assault occur in the pier district. With the city laid out in a grid format within these walls, it enables the garrison to quickly deploy forces and close off any section of the city they might need to, either to keep foes out, or trap them in.   There are only three entrances into the city, officially. A gate at each cardinal direction that can be closed within 30 seconds of notification with monstrous heavy iron doors, the city able to withstand a siege allegedly for months.

Industry & Trade

Very little is actually made in Thanyra. There are several blacksmiths, working the precious raw ore shipped in from the dwarven strongholds to the west and north, and cobblers and leatherworkers use hides from the farmland to the south, but the finest goods are shipped in from all over Lawold. Only locals and poor out-of-towners buy local crafts.

Infrastructure

Kobold-dug sewers supply the city with waste management, and the thieve's guild and other undesirables quick access throughout the city, bypassing the many security checkpoints throughout.   Roads are laid out in a grid pattern, making it easy for the Thanyran Guard to erect defenses and cut off sections of the city from aggressors.   Large docks that help fund the city are erected in the crescent-shaped bay on the city's eastern side. Ranging from small jetties to monstrous piers for the largest shipping vessels, as well as combatant ships, which have priority.

Assets

Thanyra is the largest trading city in Nainarv. With goods from east and west and south all funneling in on a daily basis, the need arose for some of the strongest coffers in all of Lawold. A hundred dragons' hoards worth of gold and gems and treasure lie somewhere in the city, though only a select few of the families' members know the location of their particular riches, and how to access them.   The city also holds several large banks, containing vaults and mountains of currency for the rest of the city's populace. These are also heavily guarded at all times.

Guilds and Factions

Each of the three families run their own Merchant guild, and these are the only merchant guilds in the city. Since they each have unique business claims and pursuits, there is rarely any competition or subterfuge between the three. The roughest arguments that break out concern little more than who gets to put a shop on what corner when the current occupant dies or leaves.   There is a thieve's guild, as any city with this much traffic and riches would attract the stickiest of fingers. Brandobaris' Bunch might sound like a group of kids throwing rocks at old people, but they're rumored to have been in the city since it was founded. There's also talk that a member of the Leadfoot family leads the thieve's guild.   The College of Enchantments rests in the northern district of the city, beckoning mage and noble alike, to either learn or benefit from the school's products. The influx of nearly limitless resources and items helped the founders agree Thanyra was an easy choice to establish their school, and the city was eager to accept. Their business and their craft and powers aid Thanyra and the surrounding areas in times of need, and are often sought after for advice by the ruling families.

History

Thanyra was founded by a group of enterprising sailors and merchants who found the secure, easily defended bay by accident while seeking shelter from a storm on the Expant Sea. The large bay provided ample real estate to establish a large dock, and the city began to grow inland, soon bringing in numerous traders all hoping to get their wares on ships to the East.   The city used to be surrounded by lush farmland, but an ancient dragon laid waste to the vast flatlands, turning them from fertile acres into what is now known as the Ashen Plains.

Architecture

Gray stone from the mountains, carved by dwarves surround the city, with tall towers of the same slate gray. Most of the buildings inside are wood, some reinforced with iron. The wealthier citizens have managed to have homes built of dwarven-carved stone, some even paying the Enchanters to protect their homes with various spells.

Geography

Resting at the edge of the Expant Sea, the city itself is carved in half by the Nermore River which runs south past Oakhurst. The river provides fresh water for the city, while the sea provides the access to travel and trade. The rest of the city is surrounded by easily defended flatlands, making it difficult for any advancing force to approach unseen.

Natural Resources

Aside from the water, the city has no natural resources of its own, bringing in everything from the outside farms and mines of the region.
