Grobs Species in Lasair | World Anvil

Grobs

Known alternately as "Deep Goblins", the Grob are a species of subterranean humanoids that are rarely encountered since their natural habitat is the higher levels of the Titanic Deeps. Unlike most residents of the Deeps, though, the grobs are a creation of an enclave of Elves that found its way under the mountains after the Dragonscourge

Created to Serve

As with most of the Goblins in Lasair, grobs were created by a group of Elves looking to "grow" a servant species. These elves, a caste that had been reponsible for physical construction, had retreated deep under the Bloodpeak Mountains after the Fall. The grobs were an attempt to fill a niche, this one of farming. The grobs were instilled with a desire to dig and to plant - but they also ended up with a strong greedy streak, with a need to collect and even to hoard seeds and tools.     Unlike many of the other Goblins which were abandoned by their creators, a large population of grob are still kept working. These small, grasping creatures dig in darkness, cultivating farms of mushrooms and other deep-compatible plants, for the consumption of those "dark" elves and of themselves.

Wild Population

There are of course several pockets of grobs living outside of the bond of their creators. The need to seek out things to plant and to dig with drove many grobs to try and leave, and over the centuries they would establish their own colonies further into the Deeps. These small communities are usually made up of about a dozen grobs, digging and planting as ever. When they get too large, it is inevitable that their greedy nature results in a conflict over possessions that results in a split, driving some number away off into the Deeps to start their own new, fresh colony.   A couple of colonies have actually ended up being founded close enough to the surface to reach open air. They will never be seen under the sun - sunlight burns their skin and blinds their eyes - but the seemingly infinite amount of plant life to take and to plant seems like heaven to them. More than once a scout from the Korth'an Conclave has been completely confused at the sight of a tiny plot of farmed land sitting outside of a cave, but with no sign of any farmers about.
