Tirnas

Demographics

Tirnas is largely comprised of Drow, with minor populations of other elf varieties and other sunlight-sensitive races such as kobolds. Tirnans aren't usually exotically wealthy, but live a modest lifestyle typical of settlements within the Principality of Aloret.

Government

A town of modest size located not far from Highrock Castle but far from the seat of power for the Principality of Aloret, local laws are enforced by a jury of peers and crime is often apprehended by knights dispatched from Highrock. Because of the time required to cross the Arcan mountains, most criminals are dealt with locally.

Defences

Physical defenses are nearly nonexistent, as the town is built far enough inland and close enough to the capital that knights from Highrock can reach Tirnas in time to ward off most threats. Instead, magical defenses around key buildings such as Matron Mother Araselle's home are present, including but not limited to Walls of Force, Hallow (energy protection), and other magicks intended to ward off would-be attackers.

Industry & Trade

Tirnas' primary exports and services include specialty cheese (using their local cave network to create finely aged cheese varieties) and their school of conjuration and divination, where they train new magicians to serve as court servitors or wandering magicians to help rural towns. Tirnans rely on the Arcan foothills to the south to graze their other livestock throughout the year, some of which they export.

Infrastructure

Most roads are packed dirt or excavated stone from mining operations, formed smooth by the "mold earth" spell. While there is no running water for a smaller town like this, most houses have their own hand-pumped well inside or immediately outside their house. They have access to underground storage caves and living quarters built into natural and excavated caves, a small mining operation for excavating additional underground storage, and a small forge for basic upkeep of metal tools. Their most significant piece of infrastructure are a dairy and a school of magic that focuses on conjuration and divination.

Guilds and Factions

Tirnan School of Divination - Clan-like school of Divination wizards. Tirnan School of Conjuration - Clan-like school of Conjuration wizards. Wizards from both schools tend to create close-linked networks that they can rely upon for assistance when a job becomes too big for one wizard.

History

Tirnas is one of Larcen's oldest settlements, having existed since the time of the island's rulership by Tel Eiren elves. Though largely inhabited by Drow, members of the other Elf varieties will often know about Tirnas and feel at home within its pastoral borders.

Architecture

Wood and stone buildings, reminiscent of old Elvish architecture (heavy use of natural themes, such as trees, leaves, flowers, and forest animals). Although reminiscent of these older styles, few buildings remain standing from the old Tel Eiren age, and as such, the architecture of the buildings has deviated some as buildings were torn down and rebuilt over time.

Geography

Based at the southern edge of the Arcan mountain range, the town is nestled in a valley between the forested northern slope up the mountainsides and the rolling grassy hills to the south. Water is fed from snowmelt streams during the spring and early summer, drawn from the ground during late summer and fall, and in times when the pumps freeze over during winter, taken from iced-over ponds and lakes and boiled.

Natural Resources

Forests to the north for wood, livestock fed on grassy hills to the south, minor stone production from small excavation operations, and significant volume of dairy products from livestock.
