Principality of Marcai

Government

The Principality of Marcai falls under jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Larcen, forming one of its three major states. Prince Elindor serves as the leader, military head, and chief lawmaker of the region. Each individual city enforces its own city laws in addition to overarching Principality and Kingdom laws, and collect taxes on Prince Elindor's behalf. Prince Elindor serves as a chief judge for the most severe infractions of Principality laws, with an advisory board formed by a council of the victim's and culprit's peers.

Defences

Defenses largely rely on fortifications built on or into the sea cliffs, using ballista emplacements to ward off naval threats. Some areas closer to larger cities are also equipped with anti-climbing fortifications, such as siege oil vats.

Industry & Trade

The largest economic drivers in the Principality of Marcai are the iron and steel forges along the coast, with agricultural production from the inland areas coming in a close second. Other important economic factors include saw mills, stone masons, and other specialty artisans.

Infrastructure

The Principality of Marcai is known for its heavy industrialized coastal cities, where raw resources are refined into usable building materials. As most all of Larcen's raw resources flow into Marcai, and certainly all of its finished, technologically "advanced" creations flow out of it, the percentage of roads paved with granite setts are nearing 80% coverage in order to keep finished goods flowing to the eastern ports within the Principality of Harol in any weather conditions.   Marcai's costal cities boast some of the highest levels of technological development thanks to the near-constant updrafts from the high coastal cliffs that form Larcen's westernmost edge. Wind-powered groundwater pumps provide the city with pressurized water for indoor plumbing, and windmill-powered stone cutters, blast furnaces, and lumber mills line the coastal cliffs to fuel Larcen's technological growth. Further inland, however, the technological progress of bustling cities gives way to pastoral farmland, where much of Larcen's livestock is grown. These areas don't get winds nearly as powerful, or constant, as their coastal counterparts, so development is stifled.

Assets

Advanced smithies, manufactured goods, general stores, construction facilities, select magic facilities.

Architecture

Thanks to the abundance of metalsmiths and stonecutters along the coast, many buildings are constructed of stone brick and reinforced with cut timber. Wrought iron decorations are a hallmark of Marcai architecture thanks to local iron production.

Geography

Marcai is a territory largely comprised of rolling plains and sparse clusters of trees, with small spring-fed streams dotting the landscape. The western coast is dominated by an imposing natural wall of cliffs along the sea, which generate steep updrafts. Fresh water is drawn from the ground, or sourced from small springs or streams farther inland.

Natural Resources

Few natural resources are readily available in Marcai, as reaching the sea from the cliff walls is treacherous, and trees are significantly more sparse than the lands across the Arcan mountain range.
