Yorwa Tree

The striking contrast of the light bark and dark leaves of the yorwa tree is a sacred symbol of all Orcish clans. This tree can never be found too far from any tribal steading.

Appearance

Tall yet not too wide, yorwa trees grow in tight clusters that can easily be recognized even atop a forest canopy. The bark upon the trunk and many spreading branches is markedly pale and papery; it can be peeled in long swathes from the trunk to produce light parchment or decorative adornments. The wood beneath the bark has a dark grey hue that lightens towards the core of the tree. Yorwa tree branches when left unmanaged will begin to grow only a meter above the ground.   Yorwa leaves are darkly colored; their hues varying from near black to deep purple. Beginning to bloom in late summer to early autumn, yorwa blossoms are small, white bells that grow in bunches. From these flowers grow heavy, round seeds similar to chestnuts.

Habitat

Primary habitats for yorwa trees are found along the eastern Orcish coast of the Vuvik Gulf. While able to survive cooler temperate areas, yorwa trees best thrive in chilling, icy climates. This is due to the nut seeds requiring freezing temperatures to fully mature.

Cultural Significance

Within the nomadic communities of Orcs, yorwa trees are a symbol of safety and peace. Folk tales speak of Orcish ancestors that would mark safe places by planting yorwa seeds for future generations. The groves that grew would come to be recognized as special places where different clans could camp together. Many traditions and rituals rely on the yorwa tree's presence or materials. Wood from yorwa trees is preferred for ceremonial objects such as combs, headgear, and weapon handles.   Nearly all Orcish weddings take place in the presence of a yorwa grove; many would be couples are willing to postpone their nuptials until camps can be made near one such grove. Children born under a blooming yorwa tree are said to be blessed with good health and uncanny luck.   Yorwa seeds are a popular ingredient in many Orcish dishes. Roasted and mashed seeds are used for many recipes including porridge and marinades. Orc mothers are known to sew yorwa seeds into their children's clothing for good luck.
