Mont Theocracy

The Mont Theocracy is two very different groups. The southern group on the coast is a very hilly region. This region is frequently raided by any nation with naval power. In order to defend this land almost every hill is home to a fortress. Most are made of rough cut stone as timber is rare.   The Theocracy that rules Montihume is called the Harmonic Doctrine and they believe in working together as their core tenant.   To the north is wide open plains where the citizens will travel with herds of livestock and horses. These northerners will flee at the sight of Sugazeh Tribes and find other herds to combine with and fight them off.   At desperate times they will head south and gather forces from the castles to march to war.

Structure

The priests lead the country and are viewed with reverence. Previously there was civil war and strife so previous leaders are thought poorly of. The priests lead the nation loosely, prompting the people towards the goals of harmony with little direct control.   There is some tension between the two races that make up the Mont Theocracy, the the Home Makers and the Peace Makers, as the Home Makers try not to be too controlling. Occasionally a castle will have someone take charge which the priesthood strives to stop. There is also some strife when a nomadic group will decide to take the fight to Sugazeh, which only leads to conflict.

History

The largest shift in the history of Montihume was when the Sugaz launched a powerful attack that took the Running Heart. The Northeners headed south but the extra mouths was too much for the castles to support so civil war was struck. Out of this The Diplomat, a near godlike figure for the religion, reunified the Mont people and a new government, run by diplomats - the Harmonic Doctrine, was created.

Demography and Population

Few people in the northern section of Montihume could be considered rich or poor. Generally everyone has a mount, decent clothes and gear. A few herd leaders or large families can gather more wealth than this but it is frowned upon. In southern Montihume it is more likely to be poor or rich, with a few castles having incredibly rich stewards. Over half of the southern Monts could be considered poor. Only about 10% of the entire population are the Peace Makers.

Agriculture & Industry

Cattle herding is common in the north, with great migrations of herds happening. The south perfers to have their cattle in paddocks though.

Trade & Transport

Montihume lacks wood so they often ship out chunks of stone or horses to trade for wood. They need Krato to do this so they are often less aggressive to them than they are to their other neighbours. Second only to leaders and priests are the Wish Makers. The Wish Makers are in charge of breeding horses for any purpose and are masters of their craft. It is because of them that Horses from Montihume are so highly prized. There is internal competition between the Northern and Southern Wish Makers. All major trade is done at the city of Last Stop, internally trade is done at carvanerserais or markets that from where herds cross.   Outsiders who perform crimes and are seen as acting against the common good are punished.

Medicine

Monts have public hospitals in most cities in the Stone Hills and even one in the Running Heart which will accept Sugaz at times, helping it be safe from raids. The Mont medical system is one of the best in Lanmet, including their mental health systems. They have a focus on wellbeing and connection.

Education

The Aux trade tongue is the commonly accepted primary language however a large number of Monts are multilingual, picking up Sugaz tribal speak or language from Parad or Renyan sailors. They will often blend tongues together, forming sentences that are mixes of different languages.   Education is taught by the priests of the Harmonic Doctrine, with a focus on morality lessons. The "Nomad" training happens at the same time which consists of how to ride, herd and fight. In the South more effort is put into teaching etiquette and trade skills like construction. All education is freely given and looked upon positively.
