The Undercity Servicemen

"Prosperity and sanctuary for the needy and the forgotten."-Servicemen motto

Structure

As only a moderately sized organization, the structure isn't quite as strict as a more well established guild.    At the lowest levels you have the prospects: potential recruits who undergo a trial period to ensure they're able and willing to conform to the guild's standards and rules. Typically, the trial period for prospects lasts one year, during which time they can be rejected from the guild with much more prejudice than an established member.    Once their trial period is over, prospects will be voted in by the Guildmaster and the officers, often times with testimony from their sponsors taken into account. Once accepted, the prospects will take on the rank of Serviceman or Servicewoman, and be allowed to take on work in any field they like within the guild, except for those restricted by rank, like treasurer or record keeper.    If a member proves themselves to be especially loyal, useful, or capable, they may eventually be promoted to the rank of officer. Officers are typically tasked with ensuring the internal operations of the guild run smoothly, and most end up delegating tasks to the other servicemen. Some officers hold specialized jobs, like the aforementioned treasurer and record keeper positions, as well as others.     The most trusted officers may be offered the chance at taking one of two higher titles, "The Right Hand" and "The Left Hand". These titles grant the officers who hold them authority near that of the Guildmaster, allowing them to often stand in for them for important decision, should the Guildmaster be dead, missing, or otherwise unavailable. Should the Guildmaster die before naming a successor, then the position falls onto the Right Hand first, followed by the Left hand. Should all three be unavailable, then an emergency vote shall be held to fill those three positions, whether temporarily or permanently.

Culture

The servicemen are comprised largely of pirates, thieves, and those generally looked down upon by society. From that, one would expect their culture to be one of filth, degeneracy, and bloodthirsty violence. In contrast, however, the servicemen are largely docile by typical criminal standards. The guild actively forbids random acts of violence, and members found engaging in it are often excommunicated, or in more serious cases, executed.   Aside from the heavy emphasis against violence, the Servicemen's culture is typically what one would expect from a collection of criminals and pirates. Drinking, gambling, and even other such indulgences are found in abundance.    All in all, one might expect to enter the servicemen and find a dismal, drunken, and debauchery filled gang of thugs. What they would find instead, however, is a group of men and women working towards a common goal: Prosperity and safety for those who have none. A guild born of sympathy and respect for the poor and the outcast alike.

Public Agenda

The Servicemen were formed with two distinct goals in mind. The first was to provide a place of sanctuary for criminals, pirates, and those who were unable to find honest work on their own. The second was to offer a unique service to kingdoms, towns, and other larger settlements. Once the guild was established, it would act as regulatory body for crime in whatever city it was stationed in. It would ensure that the poor of the city was provided for and kept away from the public view, while also keeping violent and random crimes suppressed. It would aim to work with the leaders of each settlement to ensure that the gap between the nobles and the peasants never grew so large as to incite rebellion by means of controlled and careful robberies. These more organized crimes would be spread out so as not to upset the nobility, but frequent enough to provide for the servicemen.
