Magicant Worlds

There are some planets in the physical universe where the presence of magis is extremely dense. This gives these worlds certain unique traits, the most defining of which is that the extremely rare type of quartz known as magicant grows in abundance, hence their designation as magicant worlds. All magicant worlds are terrestrial planets that harbor intelligent lifeforms. Some theorize that the existence of sentient creatures is a necessary factor that contributes to the nature of these worlds.   If a planet is a magicant world, so are its echoes in the other two planes of the physical universe; in other worlds a planet that is magicant in shadowfell, will also be magicant in both the feywild and the material plane.

Worlds suffused with Magis

Magicant worlds have an extremely high density of magis; this is because–for reasons that continue to elude scholars–these planets constantly absorb magis from the universe. This affects their environment is certain ways common to all such worlds.

Magis Mists

The manifestation of toxic magis mists is a relatively common phenomenon in magicant worlds. They rarely last for more than a few hours, most often existing for some minutes before dissipating harmlessly. They manifest unexpectedly, but never suddenly, thus (usually) giving ample time for creatures to evacuate the immediate area. They can appear even in enclosed spaces such as buildings or in underground caverns where they tend to last longer.   On magicant worlds, magis mists usually form high in the sky within clouds. This is harmless for creatures in the ground, even if it's raining, and produces some of the most spectacular vistas in terrestrial planets. They are a hazard to skyships however, and so pilots must avoid them.

Holes in Wildspace

The vast majority of magicant worlds are within wildspace systems. However, their nature as magis absorbers prevents wildspace from manifesting in the path of their orbit. This means that magicant worlds exist in normal space, making it difficult to approach them using spelljammers that are not equipped with real life-support systems and protection from the deadliness of outer space.

Effects on Spellcasting

One would think that such high concentrations of magis would make spellcasting easier and while that is certainly true, there are certain setbacks that must be considered.   Ordinarily, magicians draw on the latent magis that permeates the multiverse to replenish their power (ie, restore used spell slots). However, on magicant worlds, magis is so dense that it's impossible to draw on it from the environment like on other worlds. Instead, the magicians of these worlds have learned how to draw magis from magicant to restore their spell slots. Thankfully, magicant is so common in these planets, that this obstacle is greatly mitigated.   The other obstacle is that using magic in these worlds is carcinogenic. Magicians have developed medicine and other techniques to minimize this danger, but not eliminate it.   The upshot to these, is that magic is much more malleable in magicant worlds, making experimentation considerably easier. This enables magicians of these planets to more easily develop new spells and creatre magic items, further promoting the proliferation of the magical sciences.   Another, harmless, side-effect of casting spells in an environment so dense is magic is that oftentimes, when a magician casts a powerful spell, they will temporarily be engulfed in magis. This is not harmful to the caster and it is something that they can "feel" coming as they cast their spell, and can thus choose to suppress it before it happens (not always successfully).

Effects on Indigenous Species

The most recognizable effect on the populations of these worlds is an increased percentage of individuals being born with the power of sorcerers and psychics. Scholars debate if there are other noticeable effects.

A prize that is not worth the trouble

In large quantities, magicant has the potential to be a game changer for a magical society. However, it’s so rare outside of magicant worlds that it hasn’t made much of an impact on the multiverse. So, the obvious question is, if magicant worlds hold vast amounts of such a precious resource, why have they’ve never been invaded by other magically-advanced worlds?   Well, in the vastness of the physical universe, who’s to say that’s never happened? But it definitely hasn’t happened often enough for planar and space scholars to have heard about it. There are good reasons for this.   Magicant is not that well-known in the grand scheme of the multiverse. And even those that have know about it, do not necessarily know that there are planets where the quartz regularly grows on. The safety of obscurity.   But there are practical considerations as well. Even under the most favorable of conditions, invading and conquering an entire alien world is no simple task. Large amount of soldiers must land on said world, and planeshifting and teleportation magic is usually not up to the task of quickly transporting entire armies quickly, cheaply, and effectively.   So, then we have the other option which is invasion by space. The most prevalent form of space-travel in the physical universe is through wildspace via spelljammers. Amassing a fleet of spelljammers to invade another planet is no small feat, but it is possible. But there’s another hurdle. While spelljammers can move through normal space, they are generally ill-equipped to protect their crew (and even the ship itself) from its dangerous effects, such as cosmic rays or micrometeorites, and because of the simple fact that the “convenient” and “friendly” astrophysics of wildspace do not apply in normal space.   And even if all these obstacles are overcome, magicant worlds tend to be highly advanced in magic, giving them the ability to mount a very powerful defense against any would-be invaders. An advantage further magnified by the fact that the magicians of other worlds, will probably not be able to replenish their powers without securing magicant for themselves in the first place.   So for the time being it appears, the benefit does not outweigh the cost… yet.   Planeswalkers from Erdos and other magicant worlds are more and more often appearing on Sigil and other places across the Trine Cosmic. Magicant is starting to get around. People are starting to notice. And maybe eventually some could get the idea and try to find ways to successfully invade these worlds infused with magis.
