Mold berries are the fruit of a certain mold that can in turn be found in the Underdark.
The mold is normally dark blue and can be found where it is very moist and warm. As part of it's reproduction cycle it spreads itself using these berries which are often injested by creatures travelling through the underdark.
History & Usage
Everyday use
Injesting berries directly causes immediate vomiting and irregular breating and heart rythm. While sometimes useful it is not usually used this way.
Water that has been boiled with fresh mold berries in it becomes very soothing and calming when drunk. It doesn't make people tired, but it makes people unwilling to act themselves, even inducing a coma-like state if drunk in large quantities.
If the berry is instead dried and turned into a powder. Inhaled powder can very quickly make creatures behave irrationally, which is why many carry small amounts with them for self defence while travelling through the underdark.

Storage
Fresh berries last no more than a week, while dried powder can last about three months.
