Fungal farmer Profession in Land of the Ancients | World Anvil

Fungal farmer

Deep beneath the surface, in the caves known as the Underdark little natural light can be found. As such farming crops of the surface, such as grain, is a near impossibility.

One thing the Underdark has, is a significantly higher average temperature than at the surface while being rather moist. This has allowed various fungi to flourish, some of which can be harvested for sustanence.

The people who have specialised in growing and harvesting these fungi are called fungal farmers. This is generally a title that can easily be translated to other languages that exist in the underdark because the profession is needed for most larger populations to survive.

The knowledge required to be considered a good fungal farmer obviously includes the knowledge on the various fungi that can be found in the underdark and how to grow it. However, it alo includes how to either make the farms movable or how to quickly destroy them.

The latter has risen as a necessity when the underdark caves shift and move. During a shift it is easy for stationary objects to become inacessible, which makes it a waste, or for organisations to be pushed into conflict where leaving farms behind for the enemy is considered a great loss.

For the general population creating small gardens consisting of the various fungi is considered a sign of prosperity, particularly if the fungi are rare or the garden rather sizable.

These gardens also make for popular gifts between the various factions in the underdark that are made as tokens of peace, appreciation or subserviance.
