Portal Guardians
What are they?
- Spirits that personify various concepts such as travel and protection. The forms they take are large and imposing, though they're usually covered in soft, thick fur that makes them appear slightly more approachable.
- Their creator is unknown, but while they started as constructs, they've since developed their own personalities and culture.
Purpose:
- Otherworldly guards that protect people going through the portals, and protect the portals themselves from potential destruction or sabotage. Mortals can be so petty.
- The portals connect multiple planes and regions, and anything could come out of them. Monsters and armies both are threats to life on all ends.
Lives and Quirks:
- Their lifespan is unknown, but it is possible for them to "die". Because they are concepts personified, however, they reform after a few years and retake their posts. They retain their memories of their previous form.
- They don't need to sleep or eat, but they can do the latter if they wish.
- Because they themselves are spirits, they are able to easily commune with spirits trapped in the Material planes and in the Astral plane. And mechanically, they can cast various divination spells at will without material components.
