Amazing
Outside of Fellville, at the base of the mountains, lie the ruins of a small city. Crumbling stone marks where the buildings once were, and busted cobblestone marks the ancient streets. It's quiet, save for the birds that have made their nests inside the cracked walls that chirp and twitter at intruders.
Despite the tranquility, there's a feeling of being watched by something—or multiple somethings. Unseen, watchful eyes follow you as you pass through the ruins.
At the end of the path, in the center of town, a large, round structure can be found. You walk through the archways to enter the building. You come out on a platform overlooking an overgrown maze. In the center sits a pedestal with something on it, although it's difficult to tell what it is from here. A set of stairs stands to your left, an entrance into the maze.
With the maze overgrown, you cut your way through the shrubbery and brush to get to the center. The unknown object on the pedestal was a sword. It shone like new, gleaming in the noonday sun. It was untouched by time or weather, and it radiated magic. Picking it up was a mistake.
Acquisition:
This can be a chance encounter as something the players see from above as they cross the Pianes Mountains, or they can hear from someone in Fellville about the strange noises that come from the direction of the ruins.
The Maze:
Upon picking up the sword, the bushes around you that once made up the maze pull away. Branches straighten and become neater, self-grooming into something pleasing to the eye. The stone paths repair themselves, and the grass and weeds that grew between them shrivel and disappear. A horn blows in the distance, followed by screeches from unknown creatures. You're now the entertainment for the spirits that reside here, and you need to find a way out before whatever made those screams find you.
The creatures are undead, and there are twenty of them in the maze.
The players must find their way out and fight through the mess of undead that crawl over the walls to find them. The sword can be used, and its abilities are up to the GM.
Resolution:
- They hopefully survive the fights.
Rewards:
- The players get a magic sword. It depends on the game as to what the sword is and does. If you would like to use a homebrew item, this can be a way to introduce it.
