Gravetender

Servants of Death who watch over graveyards and the restless spirits within.   This career path is often misunderstood due to the mortal populace's relationship with the Thirteenth deity of the core pantheon. Those who take up the mantle of a Gravetender often forfeit their names, choosing to go by their title. They hold the position until they pass, though some Gravetenders are suspected to be spirits themselves, lingering on in the mortal realm to continue their vigil at the behest of their god.   It is worth noting that Grtavetendeers are completely separate from clerics and champions in the traditional sense. Most Gravetenders have limited magical ability, despite their close and powerful connection to Death. Many are capable of inscribing runes onto items, but will only do so for fellow followers of the Thirteenth. They charge these adventurers nothing for this service, though those same adventurers claim to hear quiet whispers within the inscribed item.

Career

Payment & Reimbursement

Towns that have Gravetenders attempt to maintain as little contact with them as possible, and that feeling is mutual. Most towns will pool together a collection of food and leave it at the threshold of graveyards and cemeteries for them as payment for their services and in hopes that they convince Death to turn a blind eye to them.

Perception

Social Status

Few places have a dedicated Gravetender. This is due in part to the perception of Death as a negative or evil force, despite the constant reminders from the Thirteenth's faithful. Many look at Gravetenders with suspicion and distrust, as they are often cold, aloof and hermit-like. They rarely engage with the living, often referring to any non-Death follower as a "mortal." They will, however, use the names of those that serve Death, and offer a deep respect and gratitude to those who worship openly.

Operations

Workplace

Gravetenders, as their title suggests, work in graveyards and cemeteries. They clean the graves, maintaining the head stones while they soothe the spirits that may remain shackled to the mortal realm. They take up residence within these grave sights, often living a life of minimalism. What documents exist of their living conditions speak of a small shack or shed that merely has shelves a table and bed within it.
