Episode 8 - The Deck of Many Things
General Summary
The party completes searching the bodies of the fallen zombies and Deathlock, Darla sets a blue fire to the corpse to keep them from rising from the dead once again. Davwyn and Darla resume their playful banter in the morning which includes a bone being launched at Davwyn’s head during his morning yoga sessions. The group utilizes cloaks to escape the catacombs but realizes no one is left inside the mausoleum and the sacrificial fire pit is no longer aflame. While surveying the pit, Darla falls in and hurts her leg. She is hoisted out by Chief and Davwyn. The party sees a loan cloaked figure hiding in a nearby alleyway. Fearing their mission will be discovered, Davwyn magically drops a message to the hooded figure which reads “Flee at once, all is discovered.” The unknown male runs away at a breakneck pace, meeting Chief (who had initially been sneaking up on the figure), telling him “run! They know!”
The team returns to the Mystery Shack around 5 am where they locate Chastin Welldon drunk at the bar. Davwyn attempts to continue his conversation about “global industries” but struggles to find success until Darla comes to his aid, offering Chastin a new drink called a Kurnst Bomb which includes a shot of whiskey dropped into a Beets by Dre beer. Darla becomes highly inebriated, Chastin and Davwyn black out leading them to do a line of Pixie Dust off the bar top, freeing an explosion of wild magic. Chastin passes out upstairs, Davwyn sleeps on the bar top, and Chief and Beldhir spend the morning shopping for supplies and food stuffs.
While out, Beldhir and Chief hear representatives of Growth Magically Ordained or "GMO" and Technologically Mastered Ingathering or "TMI" Industries offering rewards for the Book of Wee Jas. One offers two cards from the deck of many things and some decent gold while the other offers an unclaimed town. After returning to the The Mystery Shack, the two share the news with the party. There seems to be a general difference of opinion on how the party should deal with delivering the book of Wee Jas. In the end, Darla casts control person on Chief, making him go stiff as a board while she sneaks out of the Shack with the Book of Wee Jas in tow. Realizing that Darla means to return the book in exchange for the deck of many things, Davwyn forcibly feeds Chief’s frozen face a potion of flying and escorts him down the street like Boba Fett hauling off the carbonite imprisoned Han Solo. Just prior to reaching Darla at the mausoleum, the Bishop of Wee Jas casts wall of force, keeping Darla separated from her pursuing party.
Darla promptly hands over the book of Wee Jas and receives the Moon Card granting her two wishes. Davwyn reluctantly receives the second card which reveals a Joker card, offering him the possibility of two more cards. Davwyn gambles and takes the trade, receiving 50,000 GP worth of gems. His second card immediately destroys all assets, deals, gold, and magic items, instantly crushing Davwyn’s hopes and dreams of becoming a large scale entrepreneur. Darla generously donates one of her wishes to negate this devastating loss; Chief and Beldhir each receive 5,000 GP as a result of allowing their party members to take cards from the Deck. The party leaves richer, ready to face the coming winter storm. Who knows what mysteries the future holds for the tiny adventurers as they continue forth on their mission to discover the intentions of The Viscount and his misdeeds against Veg Corp at Raiford"s Keep.
