Episode 25 - The Watcher's Arcadia
While the other half of the party waits outside the Umbric Archives, Booty, Davwyn, and Klork finish up some last minute preparations before entering the library. Booty infiltrates the Birkin University Medical Center in an attempt to develop further information concerning the renowned scientist. Flying up to the roof of the building allows her to enter his offices unnoticed where she locates several strange creatures in cages, miscellaneous animal parts, and some paperwork advising that some of the "subjects" were more resistant than others. Booty then took a small cage that housed a furry looking creature and exited the premises without issue. Davwyn visited the headquarters of Anpose Incorporated where he spoke with a warehouse employee about the basics of the operation. The employee advised that the company functioned as a donation center and offered unwanted household items and clothes to the less fortunate for a significantly discounted price. Davwyn bluffed, stating he was a potential investor and wished to speak to the head of the company, later identified as Melanie Anpose, but was advised he needed to return during business hours. Davwyn then left a "donation" of his personal stein "Nettle the Kettle," which he apparently left with specific instructions to scout out the building. Finally, Klork walked off alone to find the nearby graveyard located behind the temple of Obad Hai. Klork felt drawn to a familiar face walking down an alleyway. The homeless man begging for coins outside The Roopty Scoop called Klork to himself and advised that the tortle needed to prove he was worthy. The homeless figure then snapped his fingers and four infected creatures sprang out of the buildings in the alleyway and started approaching the dark turtle. Attempting to destroy the fungal beasts, Klork used his clerical ability to destroy undead but he found himself powerless against them. With determination to overwhelm his opponents, Klork summoned dark spirits around himself and completely vaporized the four infected humanoids. Just before disappearing around the corner, the homeless man smiled and stated his faith was well placed.
The three separated members of the Horsepissers then meet up at the Salty Pirate in the Burrows. Booty gains some information about how well Dr. William Birkin's research benefited the hospital, the purple granite trade out of the Lilac Mines, and how homeless people and travelors have gone missing recently. Davwyn discovers that his beer, Beets by Dre Beer, is being produced locally by a brewery called The Bung Hole, and Klork offers Indulgences....for a price of course.
Finally, the entire party meets outside the massic library and discuss their plan of attack to learn the truth behind the name "Mycorjet." The library is a vast, three story building filled with endless shelves of books, articles, and historical documents. The party speaks with the librarian, Mr. Dewey, who offers to help the party with some of their personal searches and offers them individual library cards. He advises that he is unable to discern the meaning behind the Abyssal name Mycorjet and fearfully points them towards the library's upper level known as The Watchers Arcadia. He warns the adventurers that this section of the library is wild, semi-conscious, and if they are not very careful, will try to collect them. He further tells the party that they must know precisely what they are looking for or else they will not find anything. Finally, the library warns them gravely to "count the shadows," and walks off sullenly, as if expecting to never see his new acquaintances again.
At the entrance to the Watchers Arcadia they find a strange archway blocked by thick intertwining roots, an inscription engraved in the archway reading "truth and lies grow from the same roots," and a lone pedestal holding up a burned book. The book is completely empty exept for a partially ruined poem. After discerning the key to the poem, each party member individually crosses their fingers and passes through the living door. Inside the Watchers Arcadia the party finds alien creatures, glowing moths, spiders that repair books, black roots that move like snakes across the ground, and strange ink runes on the walls. While exploring the initial entrance to the library, Klork is ambushed by Tome Wardens and Bibliophages. After the fight Fadkat begins to hear a sing songy whisper while the others begin to hear deep breathing and muttering.
How will the party discern between what is true and what is false? What creatures lie ahead of the party that may aid or harm them? And what is the importance of Mycorjet?
