Episode 2 - Officer Skittlesworth and the Harvest Festival

General Summary

The party awoke in the dingy cave and came to the conclusion to venture into town. The party, famished from the spat with the Kobolds, came to rest at the Picky Cricket Tavern. Davwyn accidentally demonstrated his magical prowess in front of the bar owner, Corvin Durvis, by engorging his rather underwhelming whipped cream. Corvin was amazed and terrified at the sight of magic which was further confirmed by the brightly lit and oddly colored torch above the party’s table, lit by Darla. Corvin then rushed out of the tavern, alerting the town of witchcraft.
The Halfling posse ran out of the back of the building, encountering Mrs. Durvis and her children who oddly enough were running on treadmills, apparently generating the tavern’s power. The group hurdled over the stone wall surrounding the village while Chief easily bound over it, astride Cortana. Sadly, Davwyn’s waffle was lost in the mayhem (may its fluffiness be remembered always). The party regrouped and decided to hold Davwyn personally responsible and capture him, tying the awkward little Halfling across Cortana. They postulated that they could convince the town folk that they had defeated the Kobold infestation, thus earning the townsfolks’ respect and explaining that Davwyn had been overcome by some unknown force caused by the Kobolds.
Part of the party remained outside the city, watching from a nearby hillside while the other half of the party, led by Beldhir, returned to the town with a restrained Davwyn. They were instantly contacted at the town center by the old constable Eremore Skittlesworth. The boys agreed to be detained while Skittlesworth conducted his own investigation of the events that had transpired. Skittlesworth discovered the body of the drowned scarecrow and the slaughtered Kobolds. While investigating the boys’ claims, Skittlesworth encountered Darla who was monitoring his investigation. Skittlesworth inquired about Darla’s wellbeing and her knowledge of the recent Kobold activity. Darla advised Skittlesworth that the party had defeated the monsters and proved their mettle, corroborating the detained halflings’ story. Skittlesworth was moved by Darla, remembering her tragic past, and invited her to town as his personal guest and character witness.
Once in town, Skittlesworth contacted the boys in jail and questioned them about the unknown substance in Davwyn’s vial. Beldhir advised they obtained the mysterious liquid from deep in the cave and that Davwyn had consumed part of it, against the wishes of the party. Due to Beldhir's affective defense, Skittlesworth’s investigation, and Darla’s testimony, Skittlesworth was convinced that they boys had active in the best interest of the town and that Davwyn had been taken captive by foreign magics. Darla was given a full pardon by Skittlesworth in the presence of the entire town and the boys were freed without charges.
The town began to fall back into its normal buzz of hum drudgery as the people went back to their daily lives. The party took a long rest in preparation for the follow day’s festivities. The following morning the adventurers prepared for the Harvest festival. Slem Jem snuck into Davwyn’s house and helped himself to a few brews, unbeknownst to the little brewer. Davwyn prepared his oak cask aged Beets by Dre Beer which the party was able to successfully have on tap at the Picky Cricket Tavern . Darla championed the drinking contest put on by Corvin Durvis and Chief attempted to sell some of Slem Jem’s pickled beets. While haggling with the owners of the tavern about the price for Davwyn’s beer, the party overhears Mrs. Durvis crying in the kitchen. She explains that her children are missing and further investigation reveals a black feather with scratch marks leading out of the building. The group locates more black feathers outside leading away from the main part of the city. An eerily familiar voice in the distance is heard saying “Darla boom baya, Darla boom baya.” Who is this mysterious voice in the dark? Why take the children? And finally….. What is Davwyn going to do about his abandoned waffle?
