Radiance

This pure, spiritual energy has shaped all life in this world. It has raised up animals into powerful and wise beings, but it has also transformed the mightiest of sages into drooling invalids. For those who can harness it, radiance provides amazing powers both physical and supernatural. Those who tamper with it and fail to control it, however, often become twisted, stunted monstrosities doomed to untimely death or a lifetime of horrible suffering. There are those who claim Radiance is a gift from the gods sent to strengthen mortalkind. And there are far more that claim it is a curse visited upon them by the demons of the shadow pits. The truth is, Radiance has dramatic effects, both good and ill, on all mortal creatures who come into contact with it. For those whose only brushes with it are based on a brief exposure, these effects are temporary and most often beneficial. Healing potions, cures for diseases, and other helpful expendable magic items are all fueled by distilled and stabilized Radiance. The true power, and danger, lies in those who attempt to cultivate Radiance within themselves. This practice involves drawing in and storing Radiance in the practitioner's spirit to allow them to advance to higher levels of existence. Those who master this skill are referred to as Illuminated. These mortals are respected and feared by the rest of Kunrai's population for their strength and hunger for more power. Illuminated delvers, in particular, are regarded with a wary eye as they have been known to view any conflict as a reason to violently harvest the radiance of those who oppose them. Whispers of so-called "murder hobos" who wander the streets of Kunrai looking for any excuse to extract Radiance in their pursuit of increased levels of power haunt the city's darker streets.
