Lucas Shepherd

Lucas Shepherd

Born and raised in the port city of Qué-Theh on the isle of Schallsea, Lucas, born , was accustomed to a peaceful quiet life. This stands in stark contrast to his ancestors. Before their relocation to Schallsea, the Qué-Nal, Lucas' people, where a nomadic race warriors from the plains of Abanasinia. It was during this time that a Qué-Nal legend sprung up regarding one of his ancestors. There are variations on the details of the story. In one version he startled Chislev while she was in the guise of a horse, and in some versions of this he tried to catch and tame her. In other versions he was enamored with Chislev and tried to make her his bride. They all share one detail in common: this ancestor was cursed to be a werewolf by Chislev. Some tellers claim those of his descendants born under the red wolf moon while it shares the sky with the planet Chislev carry the curse, and that they too are werewolves. Of course, this was long before the other tribes defeated the Qué-Nal, and they were forced to leave and settle in Schallsea.   While there are some tall tales about sporadic distant relatives, Lucas' family never put much stock in them or the legend they stem from. Growing up, Lucas was like any of the other boys in his village. He quarreled with siblings, roughhoused, hunted, fished, and helped his father with whatever needed doing. It was during an argument with one of his siblings that the first signs began to show that there was truth to the old stories. As his mother was coming over to breakup the escalating argument and make peace, she saw Lucas's eyes flash a pale yellow, with the white's of the eye disappearing.   As he got older, these incidents became more common for a period of time. Eyes would change yellow, his teeth would become fangs, he would grow claws. As rumors swirled in the village, Lucas was allowed out less and less. In time, Lucas began to show some ability to control these changes, enabling some since of normalcy; he at least could help his father or neighbors. However, he was not allowed to roughhouse or learn to fight to help defend his village. This left him crestfallen; all he could do was watch the other young men of his village as they learned. Sometimes, while alone late at night, Lucas would try to practice what he saw the others learning.   It was on a rather calm, beautiful day that his Schallsea was invaded by the Blue Dragon Army. Living in a port city, Lucas' village was among the first hit. He and others not trained or able to fight were forced to leave while others ensured they could make an escape. Lucas knew he needed to help defend his island and retake his home; he needed to learn to fight and rid himself of this curse. Before slipping away in a small boat, he picked up a small stone to carry a piece of his home and remind himself why he's away.   Leaving his once serene home to save it -- and his family's future -- was the hardest thing he's ever had to do. As he travels abroad, he adopted the name Lucas Shepard in an attempt to obscure his Qué-Nal identity to avoid any lingering animosity that may still exist from any other Abanasinian Plainsmen he may encounter on his quest.
