The Sky
The Sky is vast, unknown, and beautiful. Populated by airships, it is home to more then just that. Massive sea creature like beasts that float and glide across the clouds. Giant flying whales, eels, schools of flying fish, things of wonder and a strange mirror to the water below. It is of course also where Dragons hunt for prey, the apex predators of the sky so to speak. Sky whales are often hunted for their materials, their air sacks are often made into airship balloons for example, and their meat is a well loved delicacy. Hunting would be more prominent if not for its dangerous. Various sky based wildlife is dangerous as is, especially Dragons. Other creatures of the sky are things like giant winged eels which feed on sky fish and birds. They can actually stay afloat indefinitely, coasting through the sky and clouds and feeding on either small fish or the magical floating plants. These plants actually grow out of clouds, like an airborne algae or kelp. They are lightweight and fragile, to the point that airships barely notice them when they fly through patches of it. The plants are very iridescent and colorful due to a lack of competition for UV rays, often forming bright and vibrant patches of greens, blues, and more. These plants form the basis of the food chain, leading to small flying herbivores and the carnivores that feed on them. Many of the massive creatures actually coast on internal airbags and barely consume energy daily, allowing them to eat once a month, sometimes even less often, and live perfectly happily. These creatures rarely come to the surface, though at times of low fog smaller sky fish can sometimes float down to the surface, though the oxygen difference can disrupt them so they rarely stay long as they have adapted to thinner oxygen levels.
Despite the apparent danger of such a place, the light of the moon seems weaker the closer to it you are, allowing many of the creatures within the kelp forests to be completely free of any mutation. This makes many of them a well sought after food source.
When some of these great beasts die, their corpses slowly lose the air that holds them up, allowing them to float down to the surface of the world. This creates a "whalefall" where a massive corpse lands and begins to decompose. Scavengers and predators of all sizes are drawn to it, often creating mini ecosystems as various creatures compete for the massive amount of flesh available to them. Various parasites and strange creatures are drawn to the corpses, and sometimes if a whalefall occurs at night entirely new monstrosities can be birthed from the depths of the carcass.
