White Desert Ray Species in Kruos | World Anvil

White Desert Ray

The Izean Wastes are known for dangers from their climate and general lawlessness. But, perhaps the most underestimated threat that can be found here is the White Desert Ray.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Similar to its aquatic counterpart, the White Desert Ray is a flat, somewhat circular creature with a long spiked tail. Its coloring matches the reddish brown of the wastes and it can easiy camoflauge itself when not flying. The spikes on a ray's tail are at least a handspan wide and deadly poisonous.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The rays seem to primarily subsist on smaller creatures who call the wastes home. They are known to be cannibalistic but it is unclear if this is a common occurrence or just a sign of desperation during lean seasons. They have no known predators which makes them bold and likely to attack anything they come across, including people, and are one of the most dangerous beasts in the world.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The ray is able to fly through magical means due to the elemental powered blood flowing in its veins and spends most of its waking time seemingly "swimming" in the air somewhere between 5 and 10 feet off the ground. Little study has been conducted on the species due to its location and ferocity but it is rumored that they can fly far higher in the air when necessary.   The rays eyes can be found on the dorsal side which has led to the belief that they hunt for prey on the ground through some sort of echolocation. They have been heard making high pitch squeaks, similar to bats, which cannot be explained in any other way and they clearly have the ability to locate their prey without sight and no discernable sense of smell.
