Republic of Zurem 1 - 893 AR & Neo Zurem 893 AR - Present
Capital City: Zurem
Ruled by: The Biashara Council
At the turn of the era, Zurem emerged under a trade union, splitting from hegemony of Kybaeum to its north. As opposed to Kybaeum, Zurem was run more as a centralized state, and grew into a close alliance with the great Republic of Ghiska, despite their distance.
History
Zurem's emergence was followed by a gradual build of trust and economy with its neighbors and later Ghiska. While the many Podrusan city states under Zurem's influence were cooperative at first, civil unrest arose just 50 years after Zurem's founding. It would be a constant issue which pestered the republic as it persevered through the centuries.
Morosian Contact
Zurem's crowning moments as a nation was their councils' idea to surrender their northern territories to the ever-growing Morosian Empire. The power-hungry Morosians accepted the deal seemingly without a second thought. Zurem, however, was able to correctly predict the unrest which would result of Morosia's overextended rule, and witnessed as Morosia's southern holdings roared up in open rebellion. Zurem's council made a move to reclaim the cities during the mass rebellions, but did not expect Morosia's response to be so powerful. The might of Morosia's disciplined military was unyielding and soon shut out any diplomatic or militaristic attempts to reclaim the cities.
Dresnid Invasion
By 720 AR, a intense nomadic tribe of Dresnids were on Zurem's doorstep. Zurem at this time was a decaying state, with trade influx affected seasonally, it was stable enough to maintain its own soveriegnty in the face of rival powers, but could do nothing more. Attempts to pay off the Drensids were denied, and in 736 AR, the city of Zurem itself was under siege by the tribe known as the Daahkens. The siege lasted 8 years ending in 744 AR, with the Dresnids having left behind only a contingent army to maintain the siege and moved on to conquer elsewhere. Zurem only managed to last due to daring supply missions along the river leading to the city. All relief forces were defeated in the open field before they could reach the city. Zurem's fall in 744 AR was a catastrophe. The Biashara Council was put to the sword and half the city was razed to the ground. From this point on, the Republic of Zurem existed in name only, being a rump state that the Zuremi-Ghiskan culture desperately clung to.
Neo-Zurem c. 912
In the year 893, the ancient city of Zurem was recaptured by the Zuremians from the receding Daahken Dresnids. At this point, there was no ruling official government of Zurem. In 912 AR, the Zuremi-Ghiskan people formed Neo Zurem, a new realm led by an elected Jagora (pronounced "ya gor ra") to represent the leading merchant guilds and families. Slowly did the Zuremi begin to rebuild their nation
Elected Rulers of Neo Zurem:
Jagora Wahis Surai - 913 AR
Jagora Yuman Inji - 924 AR
Jagora Musan Surai - 936 AR
