Thalos Latakto - 979 AR

History

Starting in 941 AR, the peasants and nobles of inner-Dimitrov grew restless and rebelled against the reigning Prince Dmitri XLIV. The rebellion was led by a former peasant, Sath Latakto, who had become lord over the town of Nerestiy, near Gokov. Being of mixed Slint and Rhalan origins, Sath compelled both the Slint and Rhalan populace to break away from the folds as second-rate citizens under the Dmitrovesk people.   By the end of the first year, with both sides having suffered horrendous casualties in winter campaigns, the leaders of Dmitrov and the Rebellion committed to an unspoken agreement of only conducting their campaigns in the short summer periods. As a result, the rebellion lasted a full 12 years of on-and-off warfare throughout the great expanse that characterized much of inner-Dmitrov territory. In 951 AR, Dmitri XLIV fell in battle against Sath's forces. Dmitri XLIV's successor, Dmitri XLV, already felt the fatigue of the rebellion and worked to sign a truce by 953 AR. Sath considers this date the founding of the great nation of Visegard.

The Argydo Wars

Argydo is a small but strategically significant region located between the Kingdom of Cyrizia, the Kingdom of Slintas, and the newly formed Kingdom of Visegard. The region has long been a contested territory due to its fertile lands and access to key trade routes. Historically, Argydo was a peaceful province under Cyrizia’s rule, but over time, it became a flashpoint for conflict due to the kingdom’s inability to protect it from external threats.   In 946 AR, the Slintans of Argydo joined a rebellion that was forming out of the neighboring region of Gokov. The rebellion was sparked by constant raids from bandits and warlords who preyed on the surrounding territories. Cyrizia, which had nominal control over Argydo, failed to address these incursions, leading to growing unrest among the local population. According to oral accounts, Sath Latakto himself visited the Slintans of Argydo and pursuaded them to break away from Cyrizia’s weakening grip and align themselves with the Gokov rebellion. Argydo formally joined with the Kingdom of Visegard in 951 AR.   In 973 AR, the Kingdom of Slintas launched a brief but decisive siege on Argydo, annexing the region in a matter of weeks. This move was part of a larger campaign to expand Slintas’ borders and secure its position as a dominant power in the region. The annexation of Argydo angered Cyrizia, which still harbored ambitions of reclaiming the territory. Cyrizia had previously attempted to regain control of Argydo through diplomatic channels and covert operations over the course of two decades, but these efforts had failed.   The annexation also of course upset the Kingdom of Visegard, which had only recently emerged as a sovereign state. Visegard viewed the loss of Argydo as a direct threat to its security and began mobilizing its forces in preparation for war. This set the stage for a three-way conflict between Cyrizia, Slintas, and Visegard, each vying for control of Argydo and the surrounding regions.   In 981 AR, all three kingdoms went to war over Argydo. This war proved the first real test for Visegard's King Thalos Latakto, son of Visegard's legendary rebel founder Sath Latakto. The war lasted 4 years, with Visegard and Cyrizia forming and breaking several truces to face the more powerful Kingdom of Slintas. The war culminated in the Battle of Argydo where forces of approximately 17,000 from Visegard, 16,000 from Slintas, and 16,000 from Cyrizia faced each other outside the city. The battle roared for 10 days, seemingly favoring each kingdom at different moments, until men from Visegard entered Argydo itself and discovered several run-down siege weapons which they rebuilt and deployed against their enemeis. The battle concluded when the generals of all three kingdoms signed a truce to collect their dead. After several days, King Thalos arrived at Argydo to proclaim his victory and sent envoys to Slintas and Cyrizia to negotiate and end to the war.
