Aghasddag

The God of Gods

Aghasddag is the long lost god of the Dragons. He was known as Ral'Atam by other mortals when his temple was still active. The dragons believe that Aghasddag created them from stone and breathed the fire of life into their bellies. According to the dragons, Aghasddag gave birth to the other Arch-gods, and instructed them to keep watch over the other races of mortals. He kept the dragons for himself, as a prized jewel on the earth. While his pantheon was still active, dragons who worshipped him were to sacrifice mortals from the other races. This served two purposes: to remind the other races of their place under the wiser and stronger race of dragons, and to remind the other Gods that their father Aghasddag was King. Eventually, the cult evolved so that dragons began offering those from their own race in sacrifice to Aghasddag. Sources are divided on this. Some believe that this was Aghasddag's Great Folly: a foolish error that lead to his downfall. Others think that the other gods convinced the dragons to sacrifice themselves as a trick in order to usurp power from Aghasddag.   Either way, Aghasddag's wisdom failed him, and he was cast out of the The Heavenly Planes by the other gods and stripped of his power. The sacrifice of dragons eventually depleted their number, until the other races far outnumbered them and were able to fight them off and free themselves from Draconic rule. Eventually the dragons' numbers dwindled so low that they could all fit into the small area of the Purian Wastes in Samayaris. The near extinction of the dragons meant less worshipers for Aghasddag, and less sacrifices. Less sacrifices meant that he could no longer fill his belly adequately, and the resulting hunger and weakness allowed the other gods to turn on him and over power him, casting him down from the The Heavenly Plane.   Aghasddag's fall was great. The dragons believe that his defeated corpse eventually landed in the Sea of Death. His mind, however, was shattered, due to the shame he experienced from his foolishness, and the mental stress of the long fall. The dragons no longer worship Aghasddag, though they still tell the tell of his betrayal/folly as a warning. A warning to dragons who betray their own kind, and warning against those who neglect the virtues of philosophy and wisdom.   Recently, however, the Cult of the One has attempted to revive worship of Aghasddag. Lead by the black dragon Nazzyd, the cult disputes the long held tradition about Aghasddag's fall. Nazzyd teaches that Aghasddag never fell from heaven, but came down voluntarily. The dragons abandoned their God, lead astray by lies from the lesser gods, and were thus defeated on account of their own folly, not his. Seeing the betrayal of the dragons, Aghasddag rejected them as his people, and declared his jewel to be corrupted. He came down from heaven in order to show his glory to the world and to draw all races to himself, in order to shame the dragons. Nazzyd and his cult believe that Aghasddag has come to start the Megala Apoktelas (Grand Ending) not with dragons, but with those from other races who are loyal to him. They seek out the relics of the Arch-Gods who betrayed Aghasddag, so that they can steal their power and feed them to their god.
