The Shadowlands

The northern polar region of Koru is known as the Shadowlands. The Shadowlands are a realm of ice sheets rent by smoldering fissures. It is the home of the Legion, and its infernal towers and castles dot the hellish landscape while in the distance, the Dark Mountain sends out a perpetual cloud of black smoke, blocking out the sun in summer. In winter, the glow of the lava pouring down the Dark Mountain's slopes acts as a colossal torch, illuminating the black, nubilous sky with faint, smoldering light. The burning fissures paint the icy plains in chiaroscuro as shadows cast by rocky outcrops mix with the orange and red light of the roiling lava.
The only land-route to the Shadowlands is the Dead Road, the valley between the Ularn Mountains and the Crags of Narlingol. The Shadowlands, much like the The White Woods, exist half in the Mortal World, half in the Spirit World.
