Alchemist Guild

Overview

The Alchemist Guild is located in the kingdom of Glaugro in the port city of Melgro. They are not the largest nor the oldest organisation in the kingdom, but they have a huge amount of influence throughout Koria since they develop a lot of recipes and give self-made recipes a Go or No-Go. This also includes variants of the Healing Potions.

History

A few decades ago a group of professionals had enough of the countless incidents and failed or more-or-less succesful attempts of so called "alchemists" and founded the Alchemist Guild. The guild has a small amount of teachers to get new students and guild members up to speed, but they do not teach like an University or a basic school. There are labs for experimenting and researching, but those labs are not for studying basic principles.

Over the years the Guild grew in members and, after a time, in property and buildings. In the beginning they were funded by privat parties and their own income, until the royal family had an incident and an Alchemist helped them. Now they are mainly funded by the royal family with a fixed amount.

There were a lot of explosions, property damage and failed experiments over the years, so the guild looks a little bit like a patchwork rug with old and new buildings or just parts crammed together.

Staff

The staff consists of three headmasters - three equals balance - and sixty to seventy fully fledged alchemists in their own area of choice. Five out of those are teachers and there are new students, mainly five, one per teacher. Besides that the cleaning and maintenance staff varies in numbers, in total around fifteen to twenty.

Sometimes the Guild Alchemists need to go to other cities to slap people on the hand and enforce the will and the regulations of the guild.

The Guild consists of a lot of species, except for the Garladans of course. There are even two Underlings who research healing potions and countermeasures for corrosives.

Labs

The Guild loves traditions and traditional numbers, so there are three different types of labs.

Explosive

The labs for explosive concoctions is outfitted to withstand a lot of - you guessed right - explosions. Reinforced walls, tempered windows, hardened stone for the floor. The room for highly reactive substances is protected by steel and spells, just for security reasons. These spells are fueled with magic from outside the room with a few crystals where magic users had put some energy into them.

Corrosive

The Corrosive Labs - some Guild members actually call them that way - are build a bit different. They have their own drains and sewers including cleaning personnel. The floors are not flat, they have a small angle to direct unwanted/spilled liquids to the drains. Also they have large windows they can open if there is a sudden development of gases. The supply depot is outfitted with corrosive-resistant ceramic plates and a few drains in the case liquids are spilled in whatever capacity.

Normal

Those are normal labs. Normal desks, normal supplies, no extra drains, no extra windows, even normal coats. Go away, you know how a lab looks like.

Influence

Since their start the Alchemist Guild enforced their will on a lot of freelance "Alchemists" and schools with regulations, safety precautions, and recipes. Normally without real force, but sometimes people need a good smack on the back of their head, right?

Right now they have influence to Hulwar, the southern lands and into Pisocenia and even the Elves - all three ethnicities - listen to a Guild Alchemist when they speak.

Tales

"You caused an uprising. You caused madness. You caused... chaos! We are going to banish you and revoke all your alchemist rights! Your potion is madness in a bottle!"
— Angry headmaster with a mad genius alchemist

"Ya measured wrong, ya dense bloke!"
"I did not!"
"Ya did! And why did ya measured wrong? Because ya daft rock burned a hole in our fucking floor! Ya didn't think with the daft rotting soil between ya ears! Go, clean it up, then we do it again until ya learn it properly!"
— Dwarven teacher to a daft new guild member

"You...why did you taste the acid?"
"To see if the mixture has the right concentration."
"That is sulfuric acid!"
"I know. And?"
"It is ... it is... Your tongue..."
"I'm a Dragonborn. I spit liquids which are highly more corrosive than your puny sulfuric acid."
— Astonished human alchemist with a Dragonborn alchemist

I gotta admit, that Dragonborn is right. But they best make sure they knows exactly what they're tasting.

Since the Guild is usually for more advanced beings, I would assume they know. But to be honest, I saw a lot of "experts" who had no idea what they were doing, so... I do hope as well that they know what they are doing :D

Madness in a bottle - Bald darauf als "Miab" bekannt.
