The annual Festival of the Masks became a horrific event as the Masked Guard rose and began to enforce the roles of the masks.

The Festival of Masks was an annual occurrence in the Province of Avenir, which held three nations that had continued warring long after the Borders had risen. It was considered a time to come together in peace and walk among one another without judgement or fear, everyone's identity hidden behind a decorative mask that most people would spend weeks making or large amounts of money buying.   As the full moon hit it's highest peak, people that no one recognized in masks that no one remembered making seemed to rise from the shadows. Their masks were white and covered their entire face, decorated only with small black designs that resembled the cycles of the moon.   The Masked Guard gathered everyone that wore masks, and spoke not a word. Any attempt to fight them was futile, like they were made of stone; immovable.   They forced everyone to follow the roles of their masks, and if anyone broke role, they were punished; dragged away by the Masked Guard and never heard from again. Their mask was given to another.
