Creation Myths of the Kobolds

The Shaping of the World

In the beginning, Tiamat arose from the primal waters and all was formless and endlessly changing. She was lonely and called to the waters, but there was no answer. So she drew Archonus from them and with the advent of Time and Law there was stability for Tiamat to work within and invite the rest of the Powers. The Sky separated from the Sea with a great crack and Selira came forth with the winds and currents. But all was still dark and wet until Pheltir arose, and the fires below heaved up into land, and set a great blaze into the sky. There was nothing to eat, however, and so Shikala emerged onto the land with trees and fruits springing up around her, and all the plants beneath the waters spreading out from her ripples. They grew and grew and began to crowd out the land until Arawet emerged with the animals to eat them. Then Tyathis came, and sculpted the Moon out of the waters and set it into the sky to inspire, and it pulled the waves with its beauty. And lastly, The Trickster arrived, and Tiamat and Archonus said "That is enough. We will pull no more from the primal waters." And they set a great arch up into the heavens and decorated it with the stars.

Creation of the Dragons

And so the Powers shaped the world that they had created over endless ages, spreading land and light and life and song everywhere. And the one who took the most delight and curiosity in the world was The Trickster, who ranged the farthest, singing the song that echoes to hear the world sing back of its treasures. And so it was that the Trickster found the secret first, and was able to hide it from the other Powers with a great cloak spun from mist and seaspray. The Trickster took two handfuls of it to Tiamat and Archonus and said to them, "Look what I have found! What is this?" And the Trickster showed them the great ball of water and magic that shone with light and power and change that the two handfuls had become.   Archonus was displeased and said, "You have found the primal waters from which we emerged, still within the world? Where did you find this?" And the Trickster, afraid at his anger, answered, "I know not, for it was far away across the waves." And Archonus called for Pheltir and said, "Where is this place across the waves, where the unformed still flows?"   But Pheltir said, "I do not know, I have never brought up land from the deeps in such a place." So Archonus called for Selira. But she too answered, "I do not know, for my waves have never touched such a thing." And Archonus grew angrier, but Tiamat calmed him and said, "We must make use of this while it is here, or else it will go to waste." And Archonus agreed, and all the Powers clamored to put their touch upon it, for they all wanted to work with this treasure. "What will we make from this?" asked Tiamat, who knew the world needed those to rule it. "It must be something mighty and beautiful, and like unto ourselves."   "Let us make a people that will soar over the world," said Selira, and the as the Power spoke it became so. "I shall give them a shape like that of the animals, but they shall be much stronger," said Arawet, and it became so. "To them I will gift health unending," said Shikala, and it became so. "I will give to them great beauty and majesty," said Tyathis, and it became so. "I shall give to them cleverness and subtlety," said the Trickster, and it became so. Archonus smiled and said, "To these I shall give life near to the Powers themselves, they shall not fear the passage of Time." And it became so.   And Tiamat smiled and said, "These are all great gifts, so I will give the greatest that I can unto them - I shall give them Magic and a Name. They shall be Dragons, and be the greatest of our children." And it became so, and it was so, it is so, and shall forever be so, for the Dragons are the firstborn of the Powers.

The Other Races and the Forming of the Folk

Dragons ruled the skies, the waves, and the earth and found it all good. But perceiving that their nature was to reign and there was nothing beneath them to reign over, the Trickster saw an opportunity to cause trouble. The Trickster turned four times in the air and spat to the corners, and then went in the form of a youngling to the mighty dragon He-of-the-Greatest-Wings, and said while he was sunning, "O Great Dragon, I see that your majesty is great, and truly you are the greatest of your people, but I must warn you. Something has turned the heart of your friend Wildest-Tempest, and now she plans to conquer and rule the rest of the dragons so that all must worship her. I implore you, act before she can and take all of the Dragons under your wing." And He-of-the-Greatest-Wings listened and took heed.   And the Trickster changed form and went to Wildest-Tempest and said to her, "O Wildest-Tempest, truly you are the greatest of your people, and your beauty and majesty is unchallenged by any, but I must tell you a sad thing. For I have learned that He-of-the-Greatest-Wings has let shadows slip over his heart and now he plans to try to rule over all dragons. Please, before he begins, show him the power you hold that he may realize his folly in trying to reign over you - truly, if one dragon should rule all of us, you should be the one who rules." And Wildest-Tempest listened and took heed.   Taking another form again, the Trickster came to another of the great dragons, the wisest of them all, and said, "O wisest and most perceptive, have you discovered? Wildest-Tempest and He-of-the-Greatest-Wings both plot to subjugate all the other dragons and rule them, that may be acknowledged the greatest. Should not your wisdom be used to guide them, that they might know their rightful place?" And the wisest of dragons listened and was concerned by these words.   And the Trickster went to the other dragons and spoke to them, and some took heed of these words and some did not. And soon the dragons fought with each other, for it is not in the nature of dragons to submit to anyone save the Powers. And the Powers were greatly displeased at the strife in their world among their firstborn, and met with each other for council, though none knew the Trickster's part in this. And the Trickster spoke to them and said, "It is a simple thing. As the dragons are our children, so do they need children of their own, others to rule and govern and give counsel to. They fight because they have none under them but the animals."   So the Powers debated and then came to an agreement, that they should make new peoples in the world for their children to guide and to serve them. Some worked together and some worked apart, but in the end the rock and soil and water and beasts and fish were used to create the first races, and they were sent out into the world. Elves and dwarves and birdfolk and halflings and all the others were formed and took heed of the dragons. And for a time all was well, and the dragons ruled over all the races of the world and there was peace.   But one by one, elf and human, dwarf and halfling, birdfolk, orc and others, they all turned from their proper places and refused the rule and wisdom of the dragons, and began to fight them and with each other. Some say that the words of the Trickster were the cause, and some say it was the races growing too vain and proud, but they all began to stray.   So Tiamat came to the wisest of dragons and said, "As you are my first and favorite children, I would see you gifted with a people who will not be swayed from your service." And the wisest of dragons said to her, "I will give up my heart's blood and my Name to you, that this be so. In this way they shall be of a blood and share in the nature with my kin and I." And Tiamat said, "You make a great sacrifice, and so you shall be rewarded. They shall be shaped as you, and be of your nature, and they will be loyal to your kin forever. The smallest of folk shall bear the greatest of duties, and no words will turn their hearts." And so the wisest of dragons gave heart's blood and Name to form the Folk, that we will be the servants to the dragons, the firstborn of the Powers.   We are the Folk, the people who serve the greatest and whose hearts will not be turned, for we were made from blood and Name. And it is so.
This is not the full truth, because it is told by mortals. But perhaps it is true enough.
