The Nature and Philosophy of Alignment

Alignment in Arawyn exists in three opposing spectrums. On each line from the neutral center point, an alignment can be best imagined like a percentage scale from 1-100%. It is important to note that a character need not have the appropriate alignment to exhibit the associated behavior, but a character who does have the alignment, will exhibit the behavior in some capacity. When envisioning how one may carry multiple opposing alignments, imagine that the character is only between 1-10% on the scale for both. It implies that a character will sometimes exhibit behaviors of each, but not so much that performing one act is hindering the performance of the other. When looking at higher powers of those forces, assume a character is 50% or more on the scale in one direction. Being so, performing actions to the opposite would be a hindrance to how often they follow the behavior of their alignment, and thus why higher powers cannot have opposing alignments. On the first scale are the alignments of Light and Dark. The supernatural force of Light exudes brightness and heat, and influences a character towards selflessness. Those with the light alignment will more often show behavior that tends towards doing things for others over themselves, putting others before themselves. They also tend to favor being considerate towards another’s feelings in any given situation. The supernatural force of Dark exudes shadows and coldness, and influences a character towards spitefulness. Those with the dark alignment are more likely to act not out of a care for others, but because it interferes with their own desires. They will also lean into more pragmatic solutions to problems they encounter. On the second scale are the alignments of Order and Chaos. The supernatural force of Order encourages harmony with the natural order and course of the world, though not necessarily stagnation. Order pushes towards evolution and growth in both the physical and spiritual. The supernatural force of Chaos, on the other hand, prompts destruction, a force that consumes and unravels all it touches. The alignment encourages the entropic spiral and aimless breakdown of all things. On the third scale are the moral alignments of Good and Evil. The morality of good is one of Righteousness and Altruism. One who is good aims to enact positive and uplifting actions with no incentive of reward, with the deed itself being thus. The morality of evil is one of wickedness and cruelty. Those who are evil tend towards taking actions with the intention of bringing suffering about and hurting others, deriving pleasure from those deeds. Here are some examples of alignments interweaving:Light, Chaos: This is a person who might believe the best course for others is to start over. Someone of this alignment set might choose, instead of trying to reform the morally corrupt leadership, to instead depose them so that the governing structure is no longer hurting the people, but care little for instating a new, more appropriate one. Order, Evil: This is a person who feels that anguish is the motivation toward the natural cycle. It could likely be a tyrannical ruler who keeps their people in line through punishment and fear. Dark, Chaos, Good: This person may believe that the best course for resolution is to simply erase the problem in its whole. They may know their act could hurt others, but it is those people who already hurt themselves who created the problem. Their salvation comes from the destruction of what they wrought, and this person does knows that their act is rewardless, but still presses on.
