The Abyss
Layers of the Abyss
The Abyss is broken up into several layers. Five of these make up the greater portion of the Abyss, while there are still other smaller "islands", these layers are created and destroyed far too erratically to truly be documented.
This is the layer where the many species of the Gul'or exist. In the material plane, they are commonly known as Imps, Mephits or other weakling demons. The veil between this layer and the Material Plane is much thinner than with the other layers, and so these demonic creatures tend to slip through, though they are too weak to survive on the plane for long. The Gul'or are the lowest servants of all the demons in the abyss. The Volcano on this layer is constantly active. The disruption it causes has cracked and burned the surface of the Ashlands. While the creatures aren't as dangerous as the others lower in the plane, the volcano provides more than enough hazards.
Also known as the Killing Fields, this layer is home to the Xum'phel or Hunter demon types. Most demons summoned to the Material plane are from this layer. Many abyssal creatures do not survive long here, but those that do manage to tend to become strong enough to make their way to the Shattered Plains and join the ranks of the Colt'yek.
During the creation of the Spire, the third layer was broken in half, turning it into the Shattered Plains. Now, the two halves of this layer are constantly at war. The Colt'yek are broken up into several sects, based on the element they were created from. While not outwardly working together, the factions focus more on fighting against their opposite elements. It is on this layer where the Zar'Ilmask are first seen, though incredibly rare.
This is the layer of the Zefyl'yek, the Under Lords of the Abyss. They control the majority of the abyss, while the "Shadow Lords" control everything out of sight. It is here that even a semblance of structured lairs and fortresses are seen, as many of these demons have amassed enough strength and subordinates to control territory for a reasonable about of time. At a glance, this layer often appears no different than an active battlefield.
The Shadow Spire is the home to the most powerful demons of the Abyss. The spire is home to many of the demon lords who control the Abyss. One sect is the Council of 13; The Zar'Ilmask, more commonly known as the True Warlock Council. It is the home of the Demon Lord Cephias the Deceiver. This was also home to another sect referred to as the Elemental Demon Lords, of which Xualla and Baalfurous were among its most infamous members.
