Commonwealth of Vacaria

Vacaria is a land of dry deserts, barren plains, and stark mountains. It is home to a tough and varied people united by a strong belief in one thing, the Power of the Community. Guided by a philosophy known as Rugged Communalism, Vacarians have little need for strong centralized government, instead relying on locally elected councils and community consesus.

Military

All soldiers in Vacaria are volunteers, and anyone can serve if they choose. There is no permanent standing army, but most citizens already have the skills needed to fight. When war does come, Vacaria relies on a strong core of experienced cavalry.   While there is no standing army, many Vacarians consider it their duty to train at shooting and riding at least once a month.   Standard unit composiitons are generally as follows:

Llaneros

The frontline unit of cavarly raised from the plainsmen of central vacaria. Mounted Lancers armed with spears, lariats and bolas. Extremely fast, and favoring charges into the flanks and rear of infantry columns.

Carbineers

Second to the Llaneros in ferocity, and the most common unit of cavalry, Carbineers are taken from the ranks to cowboy riflemen. Armed with lever action carbines and six shooters, Carbineers charge close to enemy formations before pulling their reins and firing a few volleys, then parting with all speed. They attempt to pull the enemy out of formation and then defeat smaller spread out forces.

Granger Long-Riflemen

Taken from farmers and townsfolk, Grangers are volunteer soldiers armed with long rifles. They are fast for infantry, and have much longer range than other Vacarian formations.

Camel Guns (Zamburaks)

In addition to horses, there are great many camels in the employ of Vacarians. The most notable use of these camels in combat is as mobile weapon platforms. Small bore swivel guns are fixed to the backs of these camels and they are trained to kneel down and be used to lay down heavy fire onto enemy formations. These cannons are not big enough to destroy large fortifications, but can devestate light to medium armored vehicles and positions. Some are armed with Gatling Guns, which are devestating to infantry.

Pioneers

Pioneer regiments are raised from prospectors, engineers, and railway workers. They are tough men and women who are skilled at quickly building and demolishing most strucutures. They are armed with shotguns, shovels, and dynamite, which can make them effective in close combat, thouth their real benefit is their ability to make defenses, lay barbed wire and mines, and also eliminate enemy foritifications.
