Golems

I stood before my metal man after affixing the crystalline core to his chassis. I was then startled as I began to hear the steady thrum of energy coursing through the air, the heartbeat of the life I had just brought into being. I began to recite the incantation, tentatively laying my hand upon the now gently spinning crystal. Soon, the core began to accelerate in its rotation. I pulled my hand back, stumbling away from my creation as the humming of energy intensified and reached its zenith, before gradually slowing down to a steady pulse once more. There was movement, a twitch in the man's neck, followed by hands straining at the restraints that kept him affixed to the table on which I worked. Awestruck, I released the product of my endeavors from his bonds, who promptly stood at attention before me, awaiting instruction.

Golems are one of the most versatile advances in magic conceived within the history of the Kingdoms. Not only did their invention herald the (re)discovery of an entirely new form of magic, but they were swiftly found to have an incredible variety of forms and possible functions. While definitely expensive, golems have seen use in everything from agriculture to combat. Their construction is a long and elaborate process, utilizing many rare and expensive components. A golem's body can theoretically be made of anything, though the best results are achieved with stone or metal. The only real requirement is a golem core, and a basic skeletal structure capable of movement to affix the core to. Recent advancements in golemancy have led to the invention of non-humanoid golems, thus creating the Arcane Locomotive, along with several other more minor technological advancements.
