Pedro III

Emperor Pedro III

Pedro III was Emperor of Brazil of the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha-Koháry from 1891 until a quiet coup in 1898. He was the son of Princess Leopoldina of Brazil and Prince Ludwig August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was plagued by madness and mania his entire life, and this affected his ability to rule. The Imperial Congress voted him unfit to rule, and proclaimed his brother, Augusto, as successor. He remained in house arrest in a mental asylum until his death in 1934.
