The First Red Wizard War: 1544-1551
Following hightened tensions within the Sacred Council of the Holy Foundation, the Sacred First (Aldros Arcanod) defects, aligning himself with the Red Wizards of Thay, of which is his homeland. He channels his own power to become a Lich and takes control of Faerun with the usage of undead legions, marking the beginning of the First Red Wizard War. Though the war ended in 1551, It took a toll on the continent, leading to much of the HFSCP needing to set up fortified locations, of which would eventually become the operating sites.
Having converted Sitio Gregorius into his own Personal Fortress, he expanded his forces across the Sword Coast, Occupying a stretch of land from Beregost to Neverwinter, Coast to the outskirts of Elturel. The Lords Alliance, in the quick expanse of the Lich's forces, fell within the year, requiring Administrator of the Holy Foundation, Cenric Ceadda, to rally the Leaders of Luskan, Elturel and the Southern Faeruni States to mount a war of resistance, forming the First Coalition. Through 1545 to 1549, the war was hit-and-runs against progressing undead forces, until the battle of Elturel, where a horde of zombie clots and undead masses were successfullly repelled, a rallying cry for victory. To this day, a monument to this feat stands in the centre of the city of Elturel, the "Monolith of Independence".
1550 was characterised by the Faeruni Empire under the Lich losing the initiative: the occupied city of Baldur's Gate is liberated by a combined force of Harpers, Zhentarim, Flaming Fist, Hunter's Guild and a multitude of Heroes, preventing Undead forces from tearing the city asunder. In Mirtul, Waterdeep is also liberated, with the locals declaring a Republic after the Lord's Helm was collaborating with Undead Enforcers.
1551 saw the Death of the Lich, and the fall of his undead legions. The corrupted lands within the former marshes of Chelimbyr were contained and fought against over the following decades, declared safe by 1634. The Thay Magocracy denies their involvement in the matters, but a sizeable increase in undead slaves in their realms was noticed, leading to hightened tensions between west Faerun and Fae, until war spilled over again in 1629.
The family of the Lich, House Arcanod, was forcibly detained by the Holy Foundation, and in a show of goodwill to avoid punishment, declared themselves sworn enemies of Thay, renaming their name to House Mekhanon. This family would go on to be vital in the creation of the Department of Tactical Theology, the Foundation's Department for religious warfare.
