Queen Clementine Bon (a.k.a. The Spineless, The Godless Simpleton)
After coming into power by ruining the Kingdom, the Patricians of the Coast had to prevent its total collapse. While placating nobles with bribes, they thrust a reluctant Queen onto the shaky throne to impose heavy taxes and engage in get-rich-quick gambits.
Second officer aboard the flagship Bon K Owl, Clementine had been thrown into politics due to her skill as merchant front and “fixer” for her swashbuckler crew turned upstart nobles. Belying her ruthless act, she just wished to keep the Kingdom at peace -and thus manageable. Privately, she felt desperately overwhelmed as ruler of a realm wrecked by a plot she herself had opposed.
Egged on by her Marshal, Clementine decided to break the control Patricians claimed to have on her and seize the stupid monopoly on roads -which instantly alienated the Coastal nobles, who had invested so much in it. Beside, the others regions outvoted her to spread the monopoly across The Council instead. The Queen looked weak, the nobles greedy: peasants turned to ascetic cults for meaning.
Her grasp on the realm slipping, Clementine granted the Church of the Ninth control of the newly invented printing presses so it could fight the cults' influence -and assist her in return. Yet the Church used this power to make the Queen known as a “godless simpleton”.
Clementine hired mercenaries, certain The Council was now coming after her; instead, it ignored her, simply ruling in her stead. A ceremonial reign suited her: she accepted the sidelining.
Soon, she supposedly had a heart attack on the lavatory. Disgusted by the Queen's “commoner rule”, The Council crowned a Grandee preacher said to be heavier-blooded, emboldening The Inquisition to go after its Bonworth nemeses.
The pirate Queen could not adapt to the Court; hijacked by the Church, her six-month rule only ruined her own region's efforts, leading Patricians to call her 'the Spineless' and use her name as an insult.
