Hanging Moss Beetle

In the Roughbark Forest, there is a beetle called the Hanging Moss beetle.     Their natural habitat is in the forests of the continent of Coracle.  The Moss beetle feeds off of the moss that grows on the tree branches.  They are particularly fond of the moss that grows on the trees inside the old growth forests.  As all of the forests on Coracle are old and untouched, they are thriving.  The moss is not tightly coiled.  It is as if someone draped layers of moss on the branches.     Hanging moss is is thick enough to attract Boughbreaks who love to use it in their nests.  The Moss beetle is roughly 2 inches wide in size, 3 inches long when fully grown, with back carapace made of blue with green striations along its back.  If it is disturbed or frightened, it will fly up and away or burrow into the ground.    They tend to lay their eggs underground or in piles of dead leaves.  They hatch during spring and climb out of the leaves or dig their way up out of the earth.  Boughbreaks love to feed on them during their hatching season as their carapaces are still slightly soft.       Scouts have discovered that in a pinch, the Moss beetle is a delicious source of protein.  If their hunting is a little thin, scrambling up a tree to lift up the moss to find a few beetles is a far easier way to add a bit more umph to their meal.     Colonists who've grown up on Kiannon have likely had a Moss beetle as a pet when they were younger.  They are easy to care for and are not deadly.  Moss beetles are easy to catch during Spring when they are newly hatched.  School projects tend to focus on feeding them hanging moss in glass boxes and watching them get larger.
