Cathay
The City of Cathay is the seat of power for The Founder’s Sect. Cathay was the original landing site of the Kiannon II colony. The city is located near the Mountains and extends down the to the Bay of Chaude.
If you come to Cathay by packet ship, you will float into the Bay and see a city built in materials that look like sandstone and golden brown. Vendors and shops flank the docks. Colorful banners ripple in the wind. As your eyes move past the market, you'll see the shops and houses built on higher ground.
The buildings gradually rise on the hillside until you notice that they are encircling a tower. The tower is build out of a darker, rich brown brick and has a wall that encircles it. You are looking at the compound of the Founders Sect. The tower rises nearly to the crest of the mountains that lie beyond it.
Multiple windows dot the sides of the tower and at least 3 balconies encircle it up to the top balcony. If the city-dwellers look up at it, occasionally they see a few white robed figures standing outside. If you are familiar with Cathay, you know that inside the walls, the Founders Sects committed members live, train and study the teachings of the The Founder, one of the first colonists to land on Kiannon II. He was the first of the Founder's 'Prophets'.
The city slopes down from the Founders Sect building and rolls gently to the docks. From the Founders Sect offices, the adjuncts and devotees can look out over the rest of the city down to the docks. The building is embedded with multi-colored shells. The courtyard surrounding the Founders Sect tower is a place where people come to submit requests.
The Founder’s Sect is the government of the city and serves as the Primary Leadership of the Mothership Council. Members of the Founders Sect wear white robes. People tend to give them and the Founder’s Prophet more respect than others. After all, they manage most of the colony's maintenance, along with the military.
The Founder's Prophet was a nickname given by rivals that began on the Mothership before the landing, but after the establishment and first years of survival in Cathay, gained more power and reverence as people began to believe that the Founder's Prophet had some kind of special wisdom. After surviving the Esle Plague years, people felt that the Founders Sect knew what was best for the Colony.
The Founder's Prophet is now a quasi-spiritual/ political role that now negotiates with the AGP for access to resources within Cathay. They have great influence over how the resources of the Mothership are used. When people arrive in the city from sky ship, they see the Tower. When people arrive from the sea, they see the beautiful adobe buildings and then the Tower. There is no visible presence of any other power in Cathay. The Mothership is in orbit above the planet and the military is based here, but they are either on the Mothership or training beyond the outskirts of Cathay.
